Just tried making some vinyl helmet stickers.
Fancied putting a bit of orange colour on my helmet to match my soon-to-come new bike.

Before:
[img] [/img]

Bought an A4 sheet of vinyl from Ebay for 99p (could be rubbish quality, but I have zero experience).

Got a version of the group logo that I designed for t-shirts last year.
Ran it through the printer on fast setting with thin lines. The ink doesn't stick, but it's mostly good enough as long as you use a bit of tissue while you're cutting to cover the other lines.

As you can see, I really bit off more than I should have chewed for this first attempt with the negative space, separate pieces and thin lines, but in for a penny...

The vinyl is very springy and stretchy so it was tricky to cut the curves. Bit dodgy, but acceptable.

The part of the helmet it's going on, wasn't flat, so there was a bit of fiddling to get an acceptable lay. Later I snipped the top section to let it lay flat.
I'd used isopropol alcohol on the area before sticking.

This was just before I got the hairdryer on it.

It went pretty flat and stuck down with a nice hot blast with the hairdryer.

Then I cut some simple tapered stripes to stick down the sides in the same way.

Job done.

I've never done anything like this before, so only time will tell if it pulls off on the first ride/snag/chuck in car/etc.

Have you checked what type of adhesive is used on the vinyl as some types of adhesive can be detrimental to the helmet material

No, but I can't say I expect it to do anything at all to it.

You've stuck the little triangle between the M + T up too high 😳

Crikey! So I have.
I thought something was up - it didn't fill the gap at the top.
Hmmm - I'll have to rip it off and cut another little triangle I think.

Edit: Now that you've pointed it out - all I can see is MRB. How did I miss that!

Looks great! Must have taken ages. Especially with a box cutter.
Get yourself a scalpel and it'll look even better.

Looks good that!

If you want some ones doing digitally give us a shout, happy to knock a few out on the vinyl cuter for you - they'd look uber crisp!

Didn't have the space for anything fancy on the back of my lid so went for…

Cheers jamesfts - that sounds great.
Yes, the Giro Feature has a lot of blank space to work with 🙂

How does it work with proper ones - does it leave a tacky layer on the good side to keep the design together while you stick it down?

Yes, they come with a backing on the sticky side that you peel off and on the other side is a clear, low-tack sheet or application tape.

Clean the surface, remove the backing, line up the sticker and apply. Give it a good smooth over and remove the application tape.

If you've already got the artwork on file it should be an easy job, drop me an email - james (at) fromthesticks dotcodotuk

Jamesfts, they look fantastic !! Is there any chance you could make me some decals? They'd be the same size but just one word? Happy to pay, etc.
I've been trying to find someone that could do some for me for ages.
