You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We will be in the vicinity of Mabie forest this coming weekend and I'm keen to get my 4-nearly-5 year old back out on the trails after the birth of his wee brother curtailed our riding since last summer. Two quick questions:
1) I see there are diversions in place on the trails. Is there enough still rideable following the recent storms?
2) Would the green or blue be better for us? I have a Towhee rope so the ups are no problem. Looking for a bit of flowy singletrack like the GT green (that we conquered when he was 3).
Cheers!
Hopeful bump?
I think the blue trail is OK but there has been more storm damage recently so I'm not sure if everything is clear. However they're harvesting the top of the hill behind the old quarries and hauling timber out along part of the blue that runs on the forest roads so you'll need to watch out for timber wagons (who do not understand the concept of 'speed limits' nor 'other road users'). I haven't checked but it's likely they're stacking timber at roadside along part of the route and knowing FLS this means they'll have run the forwarders out onto the road and made a huge mess.
Thank you 🙂
Do you think green or blue would give us the best bang for our buck? I’m likely to only be allowed one of them as the husband will be holding the baby
There's no single-track on the Mabie green, it's all fire road (I'm 95% sure, it's a wee while since I've done it but that was towing the wee one in her Burley trailer at the time).
Blue has a couple of stretches though so I'd go for that I think. The last time I was there a couple of weeks ago there was a diversion on the blue taking you along the Red towards the burn splash (headed down towards the Scorpion's Tail). I can't imagine that's where it actually sends you but whichever way it goes there'll be a spicy climb out again.
If offer to nip out for a recce lap but I'm one day clear on the old COVID test and won't know till tomorrow whether I'm allowed out again yet...
Go for the blue, it'll be fine even with the odd diversion. The green there really isn't much to write home about.
Beat Blue around is glentrool but probably a bit far away for you
Thanks everyone. Looks like the blue it is.
Jamesmio - we will be there at the weekend so still time! I am day 2 post release from covid too and looking forward to a nice wee break (as we had to cancel our half term break last week due to the pesky virus). Fingers crossed I'll have the energy be able to tow the 4 year old on the uphills!
If the Blue is diverted where I think it is then you’ll have one quite likely off & push/carry climb to content with.
It’s not that long but it is definitely a bit of a stinker (‘Baby Scorpian’ for those that know it).
