I'm looking for some cranks on a new build trail/AM bike and can get a deal on some M985's. Are they likely to be much weaker than the M980's or equivalent XT/SLX offerings?

No different to 980s whatsoever, only difference is BCD (which is a pain if you ever want to run non-XTR rings).

No reason to think they'll be different from XT/SLX, unless you're looking at older SLX with steel pedal inserts.

I thought that would be the case. cheers

I'm going to run a wolf tooth chain ring so should be fine.
