Hi all,

Quick question if anybody has a definitive answer?

For my current build I have recently bought 9 speed XT everything, M770 shifters, cassette, M771 front mech, HG93 chain and an M772 rear mech.

Was going to go for an M770 chainset but like the look of the new M980 and M780 10 speed chainsets, could I use either of these, preferably the 980, with the components I have already or are my only options to buy all 10 speed components to match or stick with a 9 speed chainset?

Thanks for any help.

I'm running a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed set up OK so I guess worse scenario is you need to run the 10 chain too?

From my recent research of the same thing, it will be fine. Don't know if it's important to you, it was to me, but the ten speed stuff is two teeth higher at the bottom and two lower at the top.

Thanks alot! Just what I was hoping to hear, Onzadog, yea I like the sound of the slightly different ratio of the 10 spd chainsets 8) being used to XT chainsets I mainly use the middle ring, always found the 22t too small to use for most stuff I do, and the 44 a little too tall for my liking. So with the new tooth sizes I may be able to use the inner and outer rings more, then maybe my middle rings will last a bit longer than usual lol

And you won't need a 10 speed chain.

Yep 10 speed chainrings will take a 9speed chain fine.

9 and 10 speed chains have the same internal dimensions. 10 speed chains are slightly more narrow externally to cope with the decrease in spacing between cassette sprockets.

They'll take a 7 speed chain fine. Chain rings have always been reverse compatible.
