Is it worth swapping my M540 standard spd's for some of the above.
Cheers
No. Not unless the old ones are dead and you can't get anything else.
Not sure what the cage is supposed to do - because it doesn't support a soft shoe and it's too fragile to take a good hit.
I use the cheaper Deore M530 trail pedals and really like them. I find them easier to use than regular small bodied ones. I've smashed the spd clip mechanism off one of them catching an awkward rock but at £20 a pop they are quite disposable!
Shimano M647. Reliable mech, indestructible and don't "grab" with rock strikes like a metal body will.£44.00 quid (merlin) well spent.
I've got the XTR version and I like them. Nice support even when unclipped. I've got the M647's on another bike and the XTR's are about half the weight.
Horses; Courses.
Lateral support is the main benefit.
The cage fore and aft helps you "find" the binding mechanism, and gives a little protection to the binding mechanism.
Much lower stack height than the M647 (relevant if you like a lower BB).
Got a selection of Shimano pedals on my bikes (inc M647)- the 785's are by far the nicest to use.
