I picked up a set of these yesterday via Freecycle, the previous owner mentioned something about the cages and how the SPDs would be fine if they were removed. Then I managed to find some M520s on Ebay for £13 delivered, so I nolonger need the 540s, but thought I'd quite like to try caged SPDs to see whether they're worth using or just for pansies that get scared whent hey're clipped in on technical stuff?
Anyway, the problem with the 540s is that both end caps have been lost, these are the round caps that the spd axle screws into to allow the weight of the cage to be supported at both ends.
Anyone know where I can get replacements in a cost-effective manner or a suitable bodge?

No, I mean M545, sorry! They're the same as the 424s above though, in terms of my question at least.
Any ideas - it's the yellow shimano logo'd bits that are missing.
are they just dust caps?
if so
just clean, then tape over with a bit of gaffer tape, doubt you will get spares unless you can find someone old/broken ones - or find a proper lbs the type that keeps boxes/trays of old crap and have a rummage so something suitable
They're not dust caps, the end of the axle screws into them, allowing the spd to support the cage at that side. Mine have the cage just waggling about loose at the moment.
I have some 424s, and 520s. I really can't feel the cage being very useful at all; either in my stiff 'race' shoes or MP66s, and when you ride in flats your foot sits on the mechanism and the cage is crap anyway.

You will need item 5 - Y-41F 98010 + Y-41F 98020 (LH & RH end caps)
and you may have lost item 6 Y-41F 05000 +Y-41F 06000 (springs)
You can order the bit through your LBS...
I like the platforms on my M424s personally but they suit a "not so firm" shoe sole....
