I've got a 2008 Stiffee. Currently running Pikes. Looking at the Cove website it's says the frame can take 150mm fork travel. Will running at 160mm really be THAT bad? Alternatively I could wind them down to 150mm?
Anyone?
I'm put DTSwiss XMC130's on an Orange R8 a few weeks ago. The frame is rated for 100mm, maximum 120mm. I thought about it like this - the head angle gets slacker the longer forks you put on. The R8 already has a steeper head angle than the P7, so I figured all I be doing is possibly slowing the steering down a little but not moving it outside realistic boundaries. Regarding the changed seat tube angle, well that's a bit academic as you can move the saddle about.
I also like soft forks, so lots of sag, and the XMC's have lockdown, so on climbs it is effectively a 100mm fork.
I don't know if there are any other ramifications for running an over long fork. I guess more leverage on the head tube is possible - in my case my days of MTB madness are probably behind me!
Anyway, my bike rides brilliant.
Wouldnt bother personally, I quite like running my pikes at 120 on my stiffee. Im sure the frame would handle it though. A friend has 160 Uturn lyriks on an Orange subzero, good fun but wouldnt say it makes that much difference.
However, if you want some shiny new forks go for it 8)
Run pikes at 125 and 140 for steep downs. At 160/150 it will drift and lift the front. Not a good idea IMO.
What about 20mm Revelations?
Pal runs pikes on a trance (original frame) that make it super slack, but, it feels all the better for it. Rides like a mini downhill bike
Thanks for the comments. There's a bargainlicious set of lyriks on offer that's why I'm considering them. If I get them I be selling my 426s though.
