Crank bros headsets were lowest IIRC. May still be some
around.

Yup, crank brothers iodine was the lowest when I was looking some time ago, if you get stuck then I may still have it in the spares box.

they have a bad rep though...

Acros do one that is good and low/short. There's one on ebay at the moment actually. That's what I run on my commuter as I wanted to drop the front as low as I could.

Is this right for an external

Looks semi integrated

No, you can get a zero stack external since the bearings have to sit outside of the headtube. I had a crank bros headset, it was utter rubbish.

The one in that link is for a 44mm headtube, you're looking for an external one to fit a 34mm headtube. A hope 1 and A on this diagram.

The crank bros one is the smallest, because it uses bearings in a race, not a cartridge bearing. I've also seen a friends one crack open and spew bearings absolutely everywhere, which was very amusing 🙂

I've used the CB directset ones for a good 3+ years and while they do have surface rust (admittedly from my old garage which was fairly damp) they still work perfectly well.

FWIW, the reason the CB ones are so low is that the headset bearings are also the cups - eg they're not separate - the outer race is what presses into the frame.
