lower fork service: What alternatives to the Slick Honey / SRAM Butter rip off?

As mentioned in a another post, I have just done a lower fork service (two, in fact) so I need to replace my stash of Sram Butter / Slick Honey fork grease.

Obviously , it is a very special lube, mined from a single cave on a long lost island, and can only be harvested at midnight.
But 12 quid for 30 ml!

I know oil prices are going up - but there must be something out there that can be used.
Or am I just being tight? I am a pensioner, don't you know

That's about enough for 2 billion fork/shock /seatpost services, how have you run out? Also at £12 a tub it'll work out at pennies a year.

Or am I just being tight? I am a pensioner, don’t you know

Last time you bought it you paid in non metric didn't you?

Big tub of slick honey. I bought mine years ago- you could make good money just buying a big one and putting it in little botles I think

RSP Slick Kick is a fine alternative.

Dunno if you still consider it a rip-off though?

I bought some Stendec fork grease as there was no slick honey/SRAM butter available at the time.

Seems to do the job, but a quick search shows it's not in stock at Wiggle or CRC.

How have you managed to squeeze that much into two forks?

Stendec suspension grease. I bought a tub years ago and still haven't finished it. I have no idea how it rates on the unicorn poo special lube scale.. but I keep lubing up suspension things with it and it seems to work.

I know my suspension service routine is well below par but I have a 35g tube of Slick Honey that's 10 years old and is still half full.!

My 30 ml pot has done 6+ lower fork services, so I have eked it out as much as I could.

If the going rate is 12 quid, the it is 12 quid and at 2 quid per fork service then it's hardly going to eat up the soft food and tinned peach money.

I am fairly sure they didn't have to use liquid gold in my Ducati forks when it was serviced. But I might be wrong.

Thanks @tomtomthepipersson - that looks interesting
@davros - Lard is the obvious back up as it seems to be std issue at Rockshox. I am wondering in Bacon fat might also release a good aroma on the trails. Maybe I could follow their lead and just not bother with any grease.

Stendec is £9 for 150ml.
Or what j-tech use above ^ RSP stuff.
Whatever you get, you'll have a tub that will last years.

Wtaf, you're only supposed to apply a tiny smear, to the seal rings and legs, not a ruddy gert dollop of the stuff.

Think of it more like vaselineing your face lips not bum lips.

PM 600?

The size of that tube means I'll probably be able to leave it to someone in my will!

£25 for a 500g tub of rsp slik kick at j-tech tuning.

I use it on forks, shocks and dropper posts. That tub should last me basically forever.

Thanks all ..

5 ml per fork - so 2.5 ml per leg is not a lot - if you fill the tops seals as per RS recommendations

^ I would suspect it is - but with a much greater mark up.
Hence why I asked the question

https://www.super-lube.com/silicone-lubricating-grease-with-syncolon-ptfe-92016

I can pretty much only get this where I am. I'm banking on it not dissolving my fork. No fancy bike greases, or if there are have to pay prices that are 2.5x back home. There seems to be a lot of scenario specific greases in the full range with Super Lube Nowadays running SR Suntour forks on the bikes so no fork oil, just lube. I'll use this for everything I think.

The price on this website seems high. It cost me £24.50.

Daft question, is it not the same as a rubber grease used in automotives, that’s not mineral based ?

absolutely not the same.

Ta, just asking as my X-fusion Hilo SL specifies red rubber grease on the seals, but that runs on car ATF fluid

+1 for rsp slik kick. I bought a big tub for £25 years ago and I've barely made a dent in it.

A decent sized pot of Stendec would be my recommendation.

I was also under the impression that's you're supposed to put a very light smear on mating surfaces but the suspension oil is still what will be the lubricant. I bought one of those tiny tins as it lasts forever and I didn't want a huge pot sat around unused for the sake of saving a few quid.

I would be interested to know how much should be used. I think in the past before I had any SRAM butter I just used a little suspension oil instead.

I use Lucas Red n Tacky for forks, shocks and bearings and haven't exploded in a ball of flames, yet.

It is meant to be a smear - but I would rather it's a slightly larger smear than to one RS put in to start with. It's lube - it will aid moving parts - there are no air ports to be blocked in the air spring slide.

I am guessing way to much could reduce the size if the air chamber - but that would have to be a token or twos worth ...

I thought the 10ml of oil was just to keep everything coated / wiper foams lubed. Most of the time it will be just sitting at the bottom of the legs.

It's a light smear if it is inside an upper - a more liberal smear if it is outside (i.e. wiper seals). Any excess will find its way out of the lowers on the first ride (and needs wiping off ASAP before it attracts dirt and drags it back in).

Anyone else also use it to keep dropper posts running smooth?

I often lift the collar on my OneUp posts and pop a bit under there.

Probably where I use most of it. One up droppers seem to need it more often than any I've had before.

Yep, got a tub of Stendec stuff that is 10 years old now and used for forks, shocks and dropper posts. At the rate it's going down I'll still have the tub into the next century!

They are so hungry for the stuff, yeah.

This has reminded me to top mine up this eve actually.

Shell Rhodina BBZ - £15 for 400g. Did lots of research into it trying to get something like slick honey/SRAM butter. Its the same viscosity, NLGI number and make up - i.e. its the same stuff. even looks the same...

yup you wont but you will have poorer suspension performance on a piece of kit thats one of the most expensive bits on your bike.

I've got a new pair of Pikes that need a lube and airshaft so will give the BBZ a go.

I'm still working my way through a 50g tube of RSP Slik Kick, but when I eventually run out I'll give this a shot. Cheers.

SRAM butter £9 for 30ml - bits4bikes on eBay. Was £5 in late 2020.

Yes, works great.

Don't they use 'Dynamic Seal' grease, the green crap instead now to increase service intervals?

^They were recommending it a couple of years ago. Not sure about now as we use Slickoleum and have a mountain of those little Dynamic Seal Grease tubes lying around the place.

Is a 15oz tub of Slickoleum really that expensive? You could share it with your buddies and still have enough for years of fork and dropper post servicing.

The tube of BBZ arrived ... sadly half of it was in the jiffy bag where it had been squashed during shipping. Can confirm it is a very slippery grease for lubricating bubble wrap 🙁
