when you just get those pangs for somthing sweet.

Been doing my best to stay away from sugar for the past 3 weeks, lost 7 lbs so far and very happy. Feeling great for it, but just now and then usually later at night i really hanker for something sweet.

Any suggestions?

If your looking for a drink while your riding you should try nuun tablets. You drop them into your water and makes a great sports drink. It's a great alternative to gatorade. Since it dissolves it has a little carbination to it like soda, but once it fizz is gone its like gatorade minus the sugar. I think every 12 oz is like 7 calories or something.

Have something sweet, just not too much and of decent quality.

Something high grade like plain chocolate.

I'm doing a similar thing as I was just gorging on sugary crap from the vending machine all day at work. Have completely cut it out during the week, then allow myself a treat or 2 over the weekend, which gives me something to [s]live for[/s] look forward to. Found my energy levels noticeably improved - not checked weight but not too worried about that. I eat a lot more fruit now as theres loads free at work - i know its got lots of sugar in naturally but I reckon fruit sugar is so so much better than the processed stuff in chocolate bar / cake / haribos etc. Always have a bag of unsalted nuts around too. I still look longingly at carrot cakes and double deckers though, and get really grumpy when some jolly muppet brings cakes in to work.

I've done well at cutting out the white starchy carbs but just can't kick my sweet tooth. I love pick and mix and Haribo, not so bothered about rubbish Cadburys and Mars chocolate although if they are put in front of me I can't refuse. At night I always have 3 or 4 squares of 70% dark chocolate. Cakes's are the best but only home made so it's easier to restrain myself (road ride cafe stops being the exception).
Sugar is like crack for me.

I just rode it out. After about 6 months I no longer had sugar cravings at all.

Pretty tough to cut it out completely. I had crazy cravings where I wanted to eat spoonfuls of sugar out of the bag.

Personally I'd avoid anything that has added sugar and stick to fruit if you have a craving.

Good quality dark chocolate worked for me. The 85% stuff.
It hits the spot but is not more ish like milk chocolate so a couple of squares is enough.

Also find yoghurt good. Again not the really sweet processed ones, but good quality organic ones.

Just have a little bit of something sweet, you won't die.
If you feel really bad about it, do a bit of exercise.

glucose intolerant here - bad genes but never had a sweet tooth

so loads of carbs and timing as carbs work thru but needs 40mins min
before riding
wheatabix, plain muesli (no crispy stuff), skimmed milk, low fat yog and lots of fruit
wholemeal toast (lots), poached eggs
whilst riding
malt loaf, pitta bread, apples
raisins, dried apple, bananas*
power bar for emergencies
cafe stops
tea cakes, bacon in wholemeal, chips if riding all day

* some consider bananas the work of the devil

edit not one for nuts - don't like after taste but mrs antigee is sugar intolerant/gluten intolerant but nut bars are big on her ride diet as a pick up - lot of calories in them and the protien kills hunger but not for me aftert aste too dry and gritty

late night edit
sweet craving try dried apple and chew them like crazy
