Post this earlier but it got deleted / didn't post / internet froze...

Following the why is long low and slack good thread got me thinking... I have a 2015 T130 Works which I love. It's low, slack-ish, but not too long which suits me perfectly. It's also much lighter than the current competition at 12kg. The Whyte is a small and I noticed they don't make their higher spec models in small! So the day I need to replace it I'll be a bit stuck for what to get.

So of all the good short/mid travel trail bikes, what is not too long and under 13kg?

Budget?

Canyon Spectral is a nice middle ground, not too long neither too short - as is the Cube stereo 140.

If a T130 actually weighs 12kg I’ll eat it, let alone my hat!

Commencal Meta 29 TR? Not crazy low but nice and low + slack. 130mm rear 150mm front, looks great in British Racing Green!

It was 13kg when new. So yeah probably without pedals. Now it has lighter wheels, tires, seat, stem etc. All adds up!

I don't know the exact reach but noticeably shorter then my Bird Zero TR.

29ers are a no go for me. I'm too short for the geometry to work.

Is this some sort of tease?

measure the reach.
it's not difficult.
tape measure held horizontally from centre of the top of your frame's headtube (you can even set your dropper post to the correct level to rest the tapemeasure on. then drop a plumbline to disectly through the centre of your BB axle.
There's little point making suggestions withoiut knowing how short you're looking for.
Properly short reach to me would be sub 400mm reach, medium (what I like best) is 420-435mm and long is basically anything above that. (and I don't like it).

measure the reach.

Just looked it up and Its 432mm. My hard tail is 600. I like both bikes but much prefer the shorter reach on the full sus.

432mm isn't even particualrly short.
plenty bikes around that.
you're probably going to be looking for smalls now that fashion has dictated everyone suddenly needs an extra inch tho 😉

Why do you have a hardtail so much longer?

Plenty of bikes are about 430mm in a medium and many of the longer ones are still about that reach in a small. Your hardtail is either 425 (S) or 447 (M) static reach plus about 15mm at sag. Nothing is 600mm reach, that’s an effective top tube measurement.

as is the Cube stereo 140.

I got one (a Sting but it's the same shape as the Stereo) and it's ace. Not too long, I got what Cube call an '18' frame but it's really only 16" (which is how I think they get a rep for being odd sized when they're not, they're just called an odd size), reach is 420mm-ish and I dropped the rear travel to 120mm by fiddling around inside the shock (6mm spacer at one end to reduce the travel and a 2mm o-ring at the other to get it to sit lower when it's topped out) and stuck some 130mm forks in it. I wanted a shortish travel, slackish FS with ISCG tabs so I made my own, kind of. It's ace (and 26" wheels too, obvs.)

Most I've seen are much heavier than what I currently have.

"Most I’ve seen are much heavier than what I currently have."

Find some scales that actually work then. Most are way off when trying to weigh bikes. What's wrong with the bike anyway? Why do you need to replace it? If you want it slacker, put the right Works headset in.

I've got a 2017 T130C RS that will be 3 years old in August, rode a few demo bikes with a view I may replace in the next year or so and do you know what? I rode my T130 straight after a few demo bikes and I came away besotted with the T130 again. It's just a bloody good bike! Like you I've changed a lot on my bike to make it lighter and I got the feeling I would have to so the same to any other bike, so I doubt I'll bother "upgrading" from the T130 for a while yet.

Back to your own bike, they made the seat tube shorter on the 2016 models, so you may find you know fit on a medium T130 in a newer model. Plenty of T130C's come up so you could always go down that route. The shorter stems of the newer models really help the handling.

Bought this frame end of 2017:

Stereo 27,5+ HPA frame

bit different color so. Around 350 GBP.
I use 2,6 inch rubber and 35 mm i.d. rims. Good old Deore 2x10. DT 370 hubs.

It's my all mountain bike and it's a blast. Frame size: better buy a size "bigger" than too small if you are in between sizes.

Total budget I had was 1.5 k (including frame, fork and stuff).
Bike climbs extremely well and is a real blast when going downhill.
But no bike for XC or so. The fat tyres have some drag...
