Hiya Chaps,
Has/does anyone run 19" wheels with winter tyres? I don't want to shell out for new rims and tyres, but not sure how effective low profile 19 winter tyres will be.
Cheers
Ricks
I run winter sport 3ds in 20 inch and they’re great but don’t have any rim protection if that worries you...
they'll work fine - if you can find a set of tyres the right size (I couldn't for a BMW I had)
When I looked into this a couple of years ago it was cheaper to buy 18" rims and tires than just low profile winters for my Nissan Murano.
just echoing swaman2, I got a smaller set of cheap alloys and winter tyres for cheaper than getting 19" OEM for my Audi. Nice alloys live in the garage in winter now so no salt corroding them or risk of sliding of a kerb etc
It's no more expensive to buy rims plus tyres than rims. I've just bought 4 rims plus tyres for my van for the same or similar price to buying just 4 replacement tyres. I would think that for winter tyres it's not the profile that you'd necessarily want to be different , but in my mind you'd want narrower tyres as they work better in the wet and snow than wider tyres.
Yeah i ran my Golf R on winters all year round 235/35/19 and they were excellent. I have 2 summers going basically FoC if anyone wants them as I have sold the car !
Have a look at Michelin Pilot Alpin. Not tried them self but are highly regarded by people on Lotus forums.

This +1 the winter tyre sized recommended on my car is narrower than the Sumer.
I'm in a similar scenario with 19's on a 3 series so watching this with interest. Plan is to get some 18" inch wheels but just need to make sure they fit over the brake calipers. I'd get 17's if I could but it's apparently a no-go with the M-Sport braking system as the calipers are too big.
I had 19" Dunlop Winter sports put on my Audi allroad last winter and it was virtually unstoppable in the snow (massive improvement over the summers previously fitted). Left them on and they've been fine all summer with over 6mm of tread still left all round after 10000 miles.
It’s no more expensive to buy rims plus tyres than rims.
For me, it's £1200 for rims and tyres, or £600 for tyres.
So, yep - it's more expensive!

Whoop! That's the size I'll be running. Looking at all weathers from Bridgestone, which appear slightly better than Crossclimates which I really rate.

Not the best argument 😉

Well like most things in life depends on which rims and which tyres. And it's not unusual for package deals to come up significantly less than individual parts. Also I'm talking non-OEM rims so no OEM premium, but with premium tyres. If you want to pay the premium for OEM rims for your winter set up then it will obviously be more expensive. for example I'm looking for a new rim for my wife car after it was severely scraped on a high kerb (not going to apportion blame at this point) and one BMW OEM rim is 6X the price of a non-OEM rim from the same manufacturer who supplies BMW.
But in my situation I was looking at £800 to replace tyres and got new wheels plus premium tyres for a few quid extra...and I get to sell my old rims and tyres so will re-coupe a couple of hundred quid, which is a bit of a bonus.

I wish more things in my life did!
Mr winter wheels steel 16’s with Dunlop winter sport £560, £300 cheaper than 4 x 18” winter tyres for my Bmw.

Can you not get a set of used wheels for the winter tyres? For instance, on a Legacy Spec B the OE wheels are 18", winter WRX alloys can be picked up for £150 for a set. Bang on a set of winter tyres and you're also saving your good summer rubber for when the roads are dry and nice to drive on.

I have looked on eBay, but it's my first brand new car, with every option possible, and i don't really want to put non-shiny new rims on.
Vain... Yes! After this thread I'm pretty certain I'm going to go for new tyres only, and store the summers.
Steelies with high profile tires on winter.
No good looking vain when you hit a winter spalling pothole hidden by surface water and flat your bling bling low profile tires/and crack an alloy.
Happens every year round here even on the main A roads.
Least you look awesome while waiting for the aa mind.
There are a number of OEM Bmw wheels that will comfortably fit over the M-Sport brake package as a couple of 17’s too.
What car is this for? I’ve got a set of 18” BMW 3 series alloys with part worn Pirelli Sottozeroes that I want rid of. They’re taking up garage space and my new car isn’t compatible with them.
Hyundai i30N, the BMW is on the way out!
I have two cars that run 19inch winters - no problems and pretty worthwhile compared to wide high perfornance tyres that your ride i30N will be currently running
Have run smaller winter wheels for years on most of my cars. That was until I got a car that only takes one size of wheel and tyre combo. I thought the 205/40zr17” sottozero winters would be crap, but in reality they’re pretty damned effective. I even managed to head up to weardale for some skiing in February with them fitted and had no issue plodding through a couple of miles of 10cm of fresh snow - in a 2wd hot hatch that’s lower than an Elise!
in really, really cold weather alloys are rubbish, mainly because they’re fragile wrt unseen kerbs and potholes, and ice can get behind the stick on weights and forces them off. I had that up in glenshee one year, but have never suffered it in the alps.
Our van has stupendous 275/40r20 tyres. I’ve just bought some Goodyear winters in that size based on last year’s experience with the Abarth. I figure its 2300kg will overcome any tendency to plane over slush
