Hi all.
My son got a problem with his 2020 giant stance 2.
It's got a rather naff suntour raidon r shock.
The rebound dial spins forever and doesn't make any difference to the rebound.
When standing and you lift the wheel and drop it to the floor it makes an almighty metal on metal type clank sound which sounds 9.5/10 on the bad sounds scale.
Could this just be the ridiculously fast revound or is something else at play.
- I've checked the bushings and bolts, chain, BB, axle etc. and all are fine.
Thanks in advance!!
Time to just go back to basics and anything that can move or wear
Does the chain slap?
Any movement in any bearings?
Cables inside frame banging?
Broken *something*? ( I noticed my snapped ST4 by dropping back wheel and hearing it bang in an odd way...)
Bb or pedal bearing completely shot?
Shock bushings or mount worn?
Inflate the shock to near max pressure and drop the rear wheel again. If the noise has gone, it's the shock. I've came across this on a bike with the same shock - the owner couldn't be done with investigating/fixing the shock and simply replaced it.
^^^^
Is the correct answer. Take the shock out of it by inflating it to the point it can barely compress. TBH, if the shock is inflated to anywhere near the right pressure for anyone over ten stone just dropping the back wheel onto the ground is highly unlikely to move the shock much.
My money would still be on something knocking within the suspension, bush or bearing, but it could be pretty much anything from a rocking freehub body, broken rear axle right through to chain slap.
Good luck, I've got a pedalling-induced creak to find on my hardtail. The prime suspect is dirty chainring bolts/recesses, but other culprits could be to blame. 🤦♂️
I noticed my rear shock clunking slightly on top out. I couldn’t work out what it was.
Next ride the bottom eyelet separated from the shaft.
Stop riding through minefields...
Thanks all
Inflated the shock to 200psi
Cures the bang unless I drop the wheel from a big height.
Was a bit wary of going to the max 300 psi for fear of impaling bits of cheap shock in my face.
So I assume it's the shock?
Worth fixing these or better switch out for something else? He'll likely be upgrading his bike at xmas so dont wanna go crazy.
Cheers all!
Hmmm.
So inflated it to 260psi nr the max and its still clanking a lot.
When stationary and the wheel is picked up amd dropped from height it cranks, but not when dropped from a lower height.
Do u think its still likely the shock or more likely bearings/bushings?
Last time I fixed an issue on his bike I replaced the casette, derailleur, amd hangar before realising it was the freehub that needed replacing :/
Thanks again
Not read the whole thread, but you have checked the shock mounts and they aren't loose? Put your fingers and thumb round the top shock and gently lift the saddle to unweight the rear wheel - do you feel movement? Repeat for the bottom shock mounts - any movement?
Are you sure it isn't the chain hitting the frame?
Have you checked the other suspension mounts - are those all solid (as in not loose)?
How hard is the rear tyre?
Suspect those will have already been asked. Does the noise happen when it is being ridden? One of the kids in the bike club has one of those bikes and he isn't massively careful with it - seems quiet enough.

As above, are you sure it's not just the chain slapping the chainstay when the wheel hits the ground?
Easy enough to test by either removing the chain, or sticking some pipe lagging/bubble wrap on the chainstay temporarily.
Although - chain slap type noises are normally pretty obvious, so perhaps a bit too obvious?
