Any suggestions for a good general purpose rear tyre with durable sidewalls in 26" about 2.25" or so wide that will fit easily? I've given up trying to fit a new Maxxis Ardent TR. Even if I do get it on the rim. it will probably be impossible to fix a puncture while on a ride. I use inner tubes so there's no benefit in having a tyre so tight.
Ha! Was about to say Maxxis. Always found them easier than others.
Older Ardents, crossmarks, advantages etc see no bother.
On one's Chunky Monkey (2.4) and Smorgasbord (2.25) are a loose fit. They're usually cheap. They're quite good (in 26er flavour) if a touch draggy.
I always find Specialized tyres pretty easy to get on & off.
Something like a Purgatory might fit the bill if you can find one in 26.
Do not look at Schwalbe super gravity. Broken tyre lever tight !
On one smogasbord was quite loose on both 26” rims I’ve tried it on - an old school Mavic d521 and a wtb st i25. Ran it with a tube on the Mavic and it’s running tubeless on the wtb. Definitely better tubeless - has slightly better grip and it’s avoided all pinch punctures so far. Had 2 pinch punctures when running tubes in it. Not a bad tyre for the price though - to me it doesn’t seem draggy but then I run a 2.3 dhr2 on the fs bike (which in itself is probably 4lbs heavier than my hardtail) most of the year.
I too was about to say Maxxis, I've always found them to be on the edge of "too baggy". Might be your rim?
Thanks for the replies. Old Maxxis tyres were fine but they all now seem to be TR, which appears to be same as the old LUST. Smorgasbord is a possibility. The Enduro version would be best for the rear because of the harder compound but the website now only lists the Trail Extreme. Specialized is another possibility. I'm replacing a The Captain Control which has a split in the sidewall but the The Captain (stupid name) isn't made any more. A Slaughter might be a good choice but I can only find them with the Control casing, which has shown itself to be inadequate for me. Maybe a Purgatory would work.
I was really hoping that someone might suggest something other than Maxxis, On-One or Specialized.
