Dear All

Running a Shimano XT 10-42T cassette on hope hub.

Just fitted new cassette (like for like replacement) and the cassette is "loose with all the sprockets able to move 2 or 3mm up and down the free hub body.

Initially thought it was I'd not done locking ring up properly but proper inspection shows that whilst the 10 biggest sprockets are free to slide up and down the free hub body the smallest sprocket is designed so that it can't slide freely up and down freehub body. When the locking ring is properly tightened the smallest sprocket is locked down tight by the locking ring  but the rest of the cassette is 2 or 3mm "too short" and able to move up and down the freehub.

It is a problem that has started with the new cassette so I assume the problem is there not with the free hub.

Manufacturing error?

I found this (post #8) that suggests it is common but I've never seen it before.

Anyone else had problems?

I know for sure that no sprockets are missing and I assume no spacers are missing otherwise two of the sprockets would be too close together.  Correct?

What is the fix?  I was thinking to maybe add another spacer before the larges sprocket.

Thanks

P

Adding a spacer before the largest sprocket is what I would be doing. You can salvage one from an old cassette. Why this cassette is doing it I can't say but I had to do the same when I stuck a 9 speed cassette on my wheel -off turbo. It even came with the spacers so it is not unheard of.

Sounds like the same problem I had with a customers bike, he had added an expansion ring and removed a cassette ring, obviously taken a spacer too then lost it.

Had to add one to the freehub then put the expander on to take up the slack.....just like Welshfarmer says.

I have a bunch of spacers, if you need on drop me a PM.

I've fitted two Shimano 11-speed cassettes in the last year and both have had this problem. Pretty crap of Shimano not to supply all the bits you need to fit their parts properly. It's not like these are cheap parts.

I think you need a spacer on Hope hubs.

Are you sure a spacer was not stuck to the back of the old cassette?

New Hope freehubs are 11sp, a Shimano 11sp 10-42 cassette fits a standard 8/9/10 speed freehub, so needs a spacer on an 11 speed freehub.

Hope 11sp wheels come with a spacer.

^ Had the same issue with a new set of DT Swiss wheels.

Definitely a spacer on the Hope hubs.

It's not a Shimano issue. If you're trying to fit one onto an 11spd road freehub then you need a 1.85mm spacer behind the cassette. All 11spd wheels that I've seen come with this spacer.

First one was on to a set of Hope wheels from the classifieds on here, which didn't come with instructions and may not have come with the spacer, fair enough. Second one on to a new set of DT Swiss XM1501s. Don't think they came with a spacer either as far as I could tell, but same problem with the cassette being loose despite the lockring being properly tightened.

XM1501s don’t need a spacer - they have an MTB freehub body.

Hope use a road freehub body so need a spacer.

You’ve either misplaced a spacer (part of the cassette assembly rather than a 10/11 spd spacer as you need on the Hope) or fitted the cassette wrongly on the DT wheel.

OK  Thanks Guys

The Hope hub is relatively new (having replaced the original one that came with bike and died at end of last year).  The LBS rebuilt the wheel with the new hub and refitted existing cassette.  A few months later I replaced cassette.  I expect the LBS has probably fitted the Hope spacer and then when I swapped cassette it was stuck to back of old cassette and I chucked it out not knowing that new HH's need the spacer.

Can I use one of the spacers Shimano supply as part of the cassette (between the sprockets)?  I have some spares.

Thanks

P

You can use anything that fits on the free hub that takes up the slack.

FWIW I haven't had this issue on either DT, Mavic or Hope Pro 4 hubs with Shimano cassettes

A BB spacer will also work.

I've got a spare Mavic spacer if you want it stuck in an envelope. I think they're a fraction of a mill thinner than the actual cassette ones.

Thanks again for all the responses and offers to supply spacers.  I'm currently in Georgia (Eastern Europe) so best if I source my own spacers tho' I appreciate the offers.

I've ordered a spare hope spacer.  In the meantime I'll use and if necessary adapt one of the Shimano spare spacers I have.

Thanks again for all assistance.  Much appreciated.
