That's a stunning bike. A shame to see.
Side note - Saddle bags look better than bar bags.
As much as it would be crap to lose all that work, the financial aspect isn’t as bad as it might be, considering what he does for a living, and for whom.
In fact, it might bring more exposure now he’s crashed it, than if he hadn’t.
It's just an expensive toy, (that actually belongs to the company?) that's been broken, I'm sure its insured...
I'd always be more worried about the rider than the bike, regardless of price.
It’s an ultralight paint job with a huge effect visually – it weighs maybe six to seven grams.
He could have saved that taking the battery out of the garmin.
“In 1503 King Gustav Vasa became king of Sweden, and he decided to build a ship,” Nohlin says. “In 1628, his namesake ship was finished. It was the most spectacular ****ing ship ever built, and it sank on its maiden voyage. It sailed less than a mile, after, like, three years getting built and so much work and so much pride in it, and the whole world was watching.“When this happened to me, I just thought, ‘wow, it’s just the same.’ So much anticipation, and so much pride and joy, and you think you’re just going to conquer the world on this ship – this bike – and then it ****ing sinks. That’s been my analogy for this. Just like the Vasa Ship … it’s almost too good to be true.”
Exactly. No doubt people will similarly recall Erik's tragic fortune in 290 years time.
That story works just as well as a metaphor for Brexit.

At which point the Garmin wouldn't work....
Is it just who thinks that, from looking at the video footage, he could've done a lot more to avoid running into the side of that car. There must've been a good two or three seconds where he would've been observing that a car had pulled out and had obviously not seen him.
The bike probably committed suicide from the shame of that handlebar bag. Rule #29

To be fair it looks like he's trying to go round the car without slowing down - it's when the driver decides to go the other way that plan goes to shit.

He thought the car was being pulled out of the space, so moved to the left to avoid it. Then it did an illegal U-turn.
but shurely the disc brakes should have stopped him in time?
Someone's pride & joy got trashed on its maiden ride by a car driver pulling an illigal turn. That sucks.
That bike though, just WOW!!!
Shit, I didn’t think I’d feel bad about the owner of the bike when I read the OP. But after reading the article I’m absolutely gutted for him. ****ing horrendous. I bet grandpa will still be out there causing danger to other road users too.
I’m sure the superhero riders on here could have avoided the crash, in their own pathetic minds.
That bike though, just WOW!!!
Meh, feels more like Gold plated Lambo territory TBH.
But some people will always be impressed by anything shiny with a big price-tag I suppose...
While I get that this bike it was made as part of a "Creative exercise", part of me wonders why a regular, boring Aethos for just $10K isn't already blingy enough, and does it even make any more of a point than "because we can afford it!".
Even the equalitarian/feminist message tied to the other bike made alongside this one feels a bit hollow when it comes as a footnote to SBC essentially shouting "Loadsa Money!!" at the world.
Perhaps I'm overthinking things. It's just I can't help noticing we're 8 months into a global pandemic, facing an impending economic shitstorm (and a likely increase in associated unemployment), over here in the UK footballers now have to remind us to feed poverty affected children and there's a ridiculous Man-baby derailing a superpower's social and political fabric as part of his last tantrum in power in the US...
With that sort of backdrop the bike industry (like most other marketing driven, consumer goods churning, engines) still feels the need to be seen spunking big sums on "one of a kind" aspirational ego-chariots presumably to fuel insta-clickbait and show off at trade shows that aren't happening this year... It's sort of 'distasteful' isn't it?
Kinda feels like "late-stage capitalism" type stuff, from a broken culture.
Or should we just shut up and hand over our hard earned for a slice of the same shiny bicycle dream?
Nice bike, looks like an old Giant TCR with discs 😉
Perhaps I’m overthinking things.
Yes you are, but I don't disagree with your core point that it's part of a slightly distasteful bike industry circle jerk.
And that includes the equality bike his mate painted as well.
Make them do it with £1k Allez frames next time please Spesh.
