Just looking for a cheap hardtail 2nd hand to mess about on the country lanes,, I can get a specialized pitch for around £100-£150 is there any other bikes around this price mark that are similar and worth a punt?

Then it became a HT model.

No idea if they're any good though.

The first ones were, but they made a basic hardtail for a few years and reused the name. Not sure if it replaced the Rockhopper, but that kind of level. edit - beaten to it!

OP, all manufacturers will have a bike or two at that kind of price bracket. I'd be purchasing on condition rather than fixating on a single model, but Specialized make pretty good valve bikes so the Pitch would not be a bad choice.

I loved those FS Pitch's. Quite LLS for their time, a proper bomber and well priced too. The poo brown one was the one I wanted. Brilliant.

Got knows, it's quite bizarre.

Have a look at calibre bikes at Go outdoors, good vfm.

I picked up a FS on the classifieds last year for £100.just about there on the build, just need to bleed the brakes and it's done! Looking forward to getting out on it.

My mate has a pitch sport hard tail.. It's not bad. 3x8 tektro hydraulic brakes, fork is a bit pants.. Xct if I recall.

At a hundred and fiddy it's more about condition is it not?

My poo brown one had Lyriks and a DHX RC4 coil on the rear, what a bike - would probably still have it except for the straight headtube (after a while of HTs I bought a blue one for a trip to Fortwilliam - had Lyiks and an early model Cane Creak DB Inline, yes the shock only lasted a long weekend!).

How dare Spesh tarnish the once great name!

I had a poo brown one as well, awesome bike!

450mm reach on a medium in 2009, well ahead of it's time. As above, the main reason I moved it on was the straight head tube.

I'm surprised spesh haven't bought it back as a chunky, no nonsense trail bike.

I had a 2011 Pro, last year of the FS versions. Ran it with a dropper, 1x10,760mm bars and a 170mm RC2DH Lyrik up front. As said, 450mm reach on a medium, and about a 66.5° head angle. Waaaay ahead of its time! Only swapped it to go proper LLS with a Bird Aeris 145.

Yeah Spesh used to make some decent cheap and cheerful FS bikes in the Pitch and Big Hit, seems daft to abandon that sector totally.

We had the HT Pitch for our son until someone stole it! It’s a basic entry level bike with heavy parts , basic fork and mechanical disc brakes (the version we had was anyway). Not really a bike for real mtbing but ok for canal tow paths and that kind of thing.

Blue pitch was the first FS I ever rode, on a week with joyriders in Spain , 2011.

For a fairly cheap bike it was bloody capable. That holiday took my riding to a bit of a different level tbh, a lot bit to thank the pitch for.
