First it was Spesh
[img] [/img]

Now Canyon are at it.

The start of a new trend?

I'm torn on these. On the one hand, they make clever use of "dead space" to carry stuff you need. The downtube SWAT was a revelation, IMHO.

On the other hand, aside from the downtube box mentioned above they are fugly wugly woo.

I'm all for it, I hate carrying stuff on my back. All we need now is a water bottle that doesn't leave it's bottle cage on the bumps (and not get covered muck would be good too)

Get a wire bottle cage and bend the neck part.

(and not get covered in muck would be good too)

Don't see how you could be "against" an optional box like Canyon's above. Have one if you want.

How are they fixed in place? If you remove them does it leave useless mounting points behind?

All for them in principle, but a hidden fixing would be my preference

We need a 'carry pad' as well incorporated. that's be a revolutionary new concept!

Unless you have them stuffed to the gunwales then whatever you have in there is going to bounce around and make a Hope hub sound like a mime artist convention in a library. Unless there's a block of foam or something similar inside to cut out and pack around your mult-tool, etc.

I like the way the cans are carried next to the wheel where they'll get the full force of the bumps - that way most of it will fizz out everywhere when you open the can and you won't have to drink too much of that piss.

Tried both those, definite improvements but neither one is 100%.

Wee cog?

I use a RaceFace Stash for shorter rides. Spare tube, co2 & inflator and a mini tool.

you need good sandwiches as well:

The taste is important. Not the box.

It's all design decisions.

Yep, weight is lower, nothing on back.

Yep, there are a bunch of new problems.

For me, the bottle covered in kaka is the one I can't get past. You can have clip off covers to guard the mouthpiece, but they essentially make the thing much less wieldy.

Both fundamental approaches have their place, neither is 'wrong' IMO..

You lot must be using some rubbish cages if losing a bottle is such an issue.

I've done hundreds of rides and 25/30 races in the last few years & never lost one.

I've a Bontrager bottle cage on my Solaris, used with several bottles and not lost one even when crashing. Here's the setup I use to protect the water bottle.

[img] [/img]

The downtube bag is from Bearbabe and holds tools and spares.

Has anyone an answer to my question on how you stop items rattling around in these boxes?

Fancy return of the late 90s top tube/seat tube frame bag?

As a product design student in the late 80's i designed and prototyped my Bicycle Thingy (in finest vac-formed plastic no less) for my BMX. A few years later canvas versions were everywhere! I'm not claiming i invented putting things in a bike mainframe but i had never seen them before (pre internet dayz). Me and a friend did invent the bash guard though - it was a 6mm thick, slightly oversized alu disc that bolted over our chainrings. Really should have patented it 😀

Don't have any pics of the prototype - just this sketch

Don't forget the Zippomatic 3000.
You can fit your bits in bottles or fit some straps.
I've put straps underneath to carry a D Lock.

Try the Lezyne cages. Very snug - cannot possibly imagine anything coming out accidentally given the force needed to pull them out. I don't like bending the wire ones cos they seem to bend back when I've tried it.

Looks way better than any of the other options like those top-tube mounted feed bags or back-of-saddle water bottles that adorn the bikes of triantelopes and Sportive-ers!
