If its for warmer weather would a t-shirt or vest base layer not be preferable?

I've got a couple of  patagonia capilene cool short sleeve baselayers that work well in summer. i burn easily so was thinking about getting some long sleeve versions as well.

MrsP has used these when riding in hot climates - she needs to minimise sun exposure. They haven't stayed shiny white though.

Altura thermocool are nice. Have you thought of arm warmers? I would melt in warmer weather with even the lightest of long sleeve bases on

Endura BaaBaa Blend Merino l/s keeps me cool and dry if I don't fancy getting the guns out (although the sleeves roll up well). Great all year round actually.

I also have some cheapo l/s top from the "workout" range in Primark. I think it's for running, but it's actually pretty good on the bike. It has holes for the thumbs and reflective detailing, very light and comfy too.

+1 on Capeline silk weight / summer weight.

Mrs_OAB has a brilliant Rab long sleeve uber light and thin top that works well.

We have both just bought some super cheap Madison tops that are really cool in the heat - but both short sleeve.

Lycra is surprisingly lacking in insulation as it wets so well. I've got a couple of really thin ones that I've worn after getting stupid sunburn and you really don't notice them. Compared to a polyester baselayer which would probably cook me! Still not sure I'd pick it over those UV sleeves though.

They'd do nothing against thorns though!

I absolutely love the Mons Royal stuff. Really breathable and comfy.

I was gonna PSA these yesterday, but couldn't be arsed in the end - Sport Pursuit have Salomon base layers on sale. They are so good. And cheap on there. The XA ones are really light, like a second skin and the Agile, slightly thicker, I think Sense is again a thicker fabric. Just so comfortable. Fit-wise, they are close fitting, so if you want a bit looser, go up a size. (If there's any left.)
