Off to Cornwall with some guys from work. Looks like heavy rain am, drying in the afternoon. Starting at sunrise, so cold, windy and wet start.
I have a gabba, a softshell gore alpx with removable sleeves or a gore goretex jacket.
I don't make a habit of long rides in the wet, so can't decide what to go for. What would you recommend.
There might be the opportunity to change into dry kit half way but can't guarantee it.
What's forecast temps?
14 at 6am. 18 by 2pm
Not that cold. If you are out that long you are going to get wet regardless if not by rain by road spray or perspiration. My favoured attire for wet summer conditions is short sleeve Jersey and gilet, perhaps with arm warmers. Can you pack a spare Jersey in a plastic bag and stuff it in your back pocket so you can change as it dries?
^^ this. Wearing hot waterproof stuff makes it more miserable.
Have you got mudguards? They'll keep your arse dry so you don't get a gritty chamois, which will be the least pleasant thing IMO.
Yep winter bike full guards. Others I'm riding with won't have guards so will get a face full of spray at some point
Prob go for the gabba then with a base layer nanoflex arms and shorts. My gilet is a wind proof jobbie with mesh on the back so not much use in the wet.
Not much space in the back pockets as wallet takes one, small pouch with powders and lock takes another and bars and gels in the third.
short sleeve Jersey and gillet! great combo!
Definitely sounds like gabba weather, you'll probably end up wet but it'll keep you warm until it dries up, and its breathable enough to avoid boil in the bag later in the day.
Which way are you going? With the wind or against it?
