My new build will be a single 36t ten so I am thinking of useing a medium rear mech cage lenght or should I be useing a long.

Short is correct if you only have 11-36 (25T range) but limited options...
I would go for a medium cage (GS) XT unless budget is huge, in which case XTR comes into play.
SRAM is for other people....I've never had a problem with XT or XTR so will continue to give Shimano my money.
Full length SP41 outer too.
