Interesting story on myths, "research" and vested interests.
I saw the original story on Twitter, my response?
Anyone that feels that London is the world's most congested city ain't been to many others...
Yeah, It's bullshit that will be regurgitated (by lazy journeys, looking for an angle) as fact because it's in two sources now...
It's been comprehensibly debunked.
Carlton Reid wrote a great article in Forbes on it.
And as anyone who's every traveled can tell you - London isn't anywhere near the most congested world city.
Most congested...... I'll raise you port Harcourt , Luanda , Lagos , Baku , los Angeles , Houston, Paris
Yeah London doesn't come close. Probably in part due to its tube network and cycle lanes
Add Bangkok, Cairo, Kuala Lumpur, and Brighton to that list. I've lived in all of them, and they're all worse.
Ho Chi Min city. Shit. No, sorry, London does not even come close to the lunacy of that place.
Just another shot fired in the incomprehensible anti-cycling culture war
The DM had a piece on some cycle way on Tottenham rd(not Tottenham court rd) trying to make it appear the road was heavily congested, and the wide cycle lane were it not there would ease the traffic, and it was in fact the cycle lane that was causing the congestion.
So they had a pic of the road, indeed congested, and a single cyclist using the bike lane.
Knowing what the DM is like in their clickbait hate stories I popped onto you tube and looked for a vid of someone cycling through London on that road and sure enough there was.
The roadway was near empty of cars, and a fair number of cyclists using their bike lane, in complete contrast to the DM pic and story.
It is telling that none of the cyclist hating commentators have the sense to at least go check out the details of the story before posting their hateful messages.
As an antidote to the above, please enjoy this episode of Fully Charged
Oh, it's the number bike lanes, not the ridiculous number of motor vehicles?
If i could post images, i would show you as poster than was put up in our neighbourhood demanding the removal of the new bike infrastructure because
"A journey that formerly took under two minutes by car now takes up to 5 minutes"
"Its so difficult to drive to the corner shop now, i might as well walk" was the gist of it.
I dont think they got it.
London ranks 49th most congested city according to this

Mr Loophole obviously didn't like getting owned by the police on twitter recently.
I'm actually OK with the myth that London is the most congested city in the world being spread, as the argument then follows naturally enough; "surely then you'd have to be an utter dickhead to want to drive in London, Right?"...
Which is essentially the real point, London's congestion is caused by too many cars and vans being used in a city that was never really planned around them, where the government and Local authority are trying to actively discourage unnecessary motor vehicle use, and hey would you believe there are alternatives already available? Funnily enough including bicycles...
You'll never break the link in people's minds between "losing" that precious, precious sliver of road width for their Range Rovers and any congestion they encounter... And of course blaming it all on bicycle lanes is a nice easy "Left Vs Right" proxy for people who probably feel a bit like holocaust deniers for wanting to carry on burning hydrocarbons like they have been for years while the media keep using phrases like 'Climate Crisis'... Let them grizzle, what are they actually going to do?
Perhaps it's better to ask them if they would prefer more bikes mixed in with the cars then? Because the bicycles aren't going away...
As the article says it's just culture-war cobblers, intended to appeal to those already in predisposed to an "anti-cycling" mindset. Nobody targeted for the clickbait is supposed to examine the sources too closely.

Do share.
I really can't stand that guy. He is an appalling hypocrite.
"This is not about a war between drivers and others but the need to have one law for all. To improve safety and create harmonious shared road space."
One law for all? From the guy whose literal ****ing job is to get people out of traffic offenses if they can afford his services. Prick.

Please someone start a campaign against loophole lawyers protecting drivers who have a larger burden of responsibility under highway code changes....
