Lockrings are they all the same?

I’ve just bought a set of wheels and some SRAM centre lock rotors and neither have come with any lockrings. They seem to range in price from a few £ up to nearly £30 each 😲😲😲. I asked Specialized Rider Care what sort I needed as the wheels were supplied by them and they pointed me to a set on Amazon for £52!!!!

can someone tell me what I need to buy please? - light as possible as it’s a carbon bike with carbon wheels so may as well keep the weight down within reason…🤷‍♂️

12mm thru axle.

Thanks

I’ve a set(came with hunt aerodynamicist) wheels but fouled front fork on my Aethos. Thankfully my Shimano xtr rotors came with lock rings(sat flusher) so no issue.

I’m sure lockrings are all the same bar depth 🤷‍♂️

I mean there are some on Amazon for £2 - in gold which I don't want but that's quite a bit cheaper than £26 obviously. Especially for 2

Amazon £2

Or

Amazon £14

I know Shimano ones come with a thin aluminium washer at the back which neither of these seem to have so are they death traps?

Whichever one you go for, get the type where the tightening tool fits on the outside - the type with internal splines can't always be fitted, as the tool may not fit over the axle

What belugabob said. I had this problem going from qr to 12mm but got some cheapo ones off eBay and they've been great.

What belugabob said, but also one lockring I have is quite low profile and the tool struggles to stay on - at the risk of slipping, rounding the splines, and whacking your knuckles into the spokes. Ask me how I know.

Any recommendations for deeper profile ones?

looks like the internal ones say up to 12 mm axle  but 15mm or 20mm need the external splined ones. I don't care as long as I can get one somewhere! Still no idea which to get though and any reputable manufacturers don't have any available in the UK as far as I can find and I'm not paying £20 in shipping for it to take 10 days to arrive either.  Honestly it shouldn't be this hard!! R2.bike want £140 to ship a £15 item.

No, internal, external tool fitment, some specific like old saint. Some will clear or contact endcaps, some external ones will hit the frame/fork. Some low profile ones are very easy to round off. Different low external ones using different external bb tools

Some like some fulcrum are nuts rather than hollow bolts

Usual bike "standards"

Now that I've had time to follow this up, here is what I had to resort to, for my road bike build, as the internal splined type wouldn't allow the tool to fit over the axle, and the external splined type that my LBS initially suggested were too thick and fouled against the fork.

https://www.wiggle.com/p/shimano-6-bolt-to-centrelock-adaptor-rtad05?utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=&utm_medium=base&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkqSlBhDaARIsAFJANkgN7Vdb1GmTGmNjaHnCJOrjKylyGZyePoFV29gvcWzTH2BLt7uADsoaAljMEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

You only need the lockring part, so have to throw the rest away, which is a bit of a waste, but it does address the issue.

(Blimey - they've gone up in price, since pre-covid!!)

I’ve got Shimano Xtr rotors with their internally splines lock rings. Had external ones but they fouled the frame at one end I think. Plus the ones that don’t foul I struggled to engage the tool properly. What I flipping stupid ‘standard’ - give me 6 bolt anytime.

In the end I found ice tools do a really long / deep cassette tool that fits over the axle of my Hunt hubs - works like a dream as it’s 1/2 drive so fits on my torque wrench too m.

Someone will have a set of Fulcrum wheels with Shimano centrelock discs and a spare pair of Shimano lockrings (they come with the discs IME)

...one lockring I have is quite low profile and the tool struggles to stay on

M6 threaded stud through the axle, nuts and washers at both ends and tightened to hold the tool in place. I use a Hollowtech BB tool on Fulcrum lockrings. I didn't need to loosen/tighten the stud as you go because the lockring slides inside the tool, just release the pressure on the spanner regularly. YMMV

These are decent and £7 a pop. Shimano have been doing centrelock bits longer than anyone else so you'd like to think they'd got them nailed by now.

If only there weren't so many standards...
