Just doing some idle research on when the water levels in Loch Loyne might drop, in the hope of riding the old Road to the Isles, a la Scotroutes in 2008, as part of a slightly ambitious 'gravel' route.

Found this blog post which suggests one of the bridges is now gone unfortunately : (

Just wondering if anyone has crossed the loch successfully, and what would be involved if the second bridge is gone?

If the water is very low (as low as it was when I was there) then it's just a wee river crossing - nothing much more than you'd come across in other glens.

Some other reservoirs are very low at the moment (notably Glascarnoch) but the Tomdoun are likely your best option for finding current water levels.

Or, you know, a packraft....

Haha, that packraft could become a chore for the remaining 99.9miles of tarmac... Good to hear it's crossable, did I read though that September 2008 was an unusually low level for the loch?

Shouldn't matter, will just prepare a backup plan if it's uncrossable.

It is/was normal practice to run the reservoir low in the Autumn as they fill up again over late @Autumn/Winter.

Just one according to the blog from January this year, and it was the shadier one of the two anyway apparently.

Fancying a loop which crosses Loch Loyne, follows old road to Cluanie Inn, follows new road to Glenelg over the Ratagan Pass, continues round to Arnisdale then follows landy tracks to Kinlochhourne via the line of pylons. Seem to remember the landy track turns more to loose and soft quad track in places before descending to Kinlochhourne. From there it's just following Britain's longest dead end road back to Tomdoun.

Alternative is to cross over to Skye using the wee ferry and take in various minor roads down to Armadale Ferry...

Pipedreams pipedreams...
