Did you know that there are over 10 places called Newport in UK?

If you're looking for trail centre riding you have Cwmcarn on the doorstep, plus Afan (Neath), Bike Park Wales (Merthyr), & Forest of Dean within an hour's drive.

Ride from the door, natural trails? Any of the hills north of the city have a number of tracks and trails along and across them but you'll need a map to link them together (unless anyone comes up with GPX or Strava for you?)

Ride up the canal to Cwmbran, then you can get off and head up Mynydd Henllys, Twmbarlwm, Cwmcarn, Abercarn, or go up the Risca branch to Caerfilli Mountain, or make a loop of them all.

Which area of Newport are you in, mooserider?

If you have a car then all the places mentioned in previous posts such as Cwmcarn, BPW and FoD are easy to get to. However, if you are riding your starting point will dictate what's easiest to get to.

For clubs there are the Risca riders who frequent the Prince of Wales Pub on a Wednesday night and further up the valley are the Halfway up lot. I think there's a group that ride around Wentwood mainly downhill but not sure of their name. Wentwood is not far from Caerleon, a short ride. Get in touch with the person that runs / ran the Wentwood 50. I think he runs regular club rides.

Wentwood is perfect if youre in caerleon, but it wont be easy to find the trails, even with Strava - Wentwood is a bit disorientating if youve never been. You will need guiding. Great local off piste in Pontypool and Risca too, but again, you probably arent going to find the trails easily.

Cwmcarn was mentioned and is very good as well, but Cafall is closed so it cuts down options.

I'm local to you, I live near the one stop on Caerleon Rd.

Email in profile if you want to hook up for a spin, I've an ebike and a Five so can do speedy or plodding rides

Cheers Ian

Guessing you are the chap with the same Tarn as his brother whom I met the other weekend at Cwmcarn 🙂

From Caerleon you could easily ride over to Risca or Bassaleg, where the trails start. It's about the same distance for me so I could easily meet you there and show you around.

Great riding in that parish, plenty of friendly helpful local riders to put you onto the trails, had a good few months there whilst working in Rogerstone.

If you make it up the canal to Cwmbran you can head up Blaen Bran if you've not already been. As mentioned before you can cut along the mountain bypass to the top of the Twrch at Cwmcarn from there.

There are a few cheeky trails in Lodge Woods at the top of the hill in Caerleon which are good for a quick spin. Not really enough for a big outing though.
