I’m looking into replacing my aging Garmin 510 with either a 520 plus or a Wahoo Bolt , they both will do what I want I’d just like to know if I can load strava routes on to the Garmin via a phone as I sometimes work away for short periods and can’t take my Mac to upload the routes

I thought the 520plus had been replaced by the 530.

Yes, but it's a bit of a faff. Download the gpx file off Strava and then upload into the Training section of Garmin Connect, then download to the Garmin unit.
You can get free OSM maps onto the 520 if you want a cheaper unit than the 520 Plus. Google 'DC Rainmaker maps onto Edge 520'

Surely you can't have to do that on a garmin bike computer?

To get routes from strava phone app, star them, sync the wahoo bolt and they're there.

On my garmin forerunner, sync the device in garmin connect once the route has been starred, and it's synced to the device.

I'd hope newer garmins do it the same as my watch, if not then that's a massive balls up.

Maps load twice as fast on the 530

I recently got a 530 and it seems fairly easy. I drew a map in Garmin connect on my desktop for one ride - saved it as a course. Then went into my phone up and selected sync to Garmin and it was on there in a few seconds.

The other route I’d followed someone else on last year but couldn’t remember the way was in Strava but not Garmin (I had a Lezyne gps at the time). I’m sure there’s a better way of doing it but I just pulled it from Strava into connect on desktop and saved it as a course.

Works perfectly - literally like a car satnav - except you can’t stick a postcode in it and select go. Very impressed so far.

I’ve got a 520 plus. Not used strava routes before so thought I’d try it out.
I just drew a route in strava. Starred it. Switched on 520. Navigated to connect IQ, strava routes. I was asked to sign I. To strava on garmin connect app on phone. Then the route was visible in the device. Easy.

What about if I’m away and find a strava strava route on my iPhone can I upload that to a garmin 520 plus or even 530 like you can with a bolt ?

Seems like you just need to star the route and it'll be synced on the next garmin connect sync. You'll need to approve the device for strava routes/courses as a one off.

Ok thank you for the help in clearing that up .... now I just need to decide between the 530 with slightly better maps or the Bolt with better battery life and control via the app ??????????

I've got a bolt and think it is excellent but I dont do any route stuff but it is so easy and reliable and the battery lasts forever. Its a keeper for me.

Bolt ordered the ease of use and extended battery life won me over
