LLandegla best route options?

Good evening all,

Some mates and I are meeting at Llandegla on Saturday for a ride.  We want to make the most of the reds and blacks.  Do the regulars have a best route that will take in most of that?  We have the option of ebike or acoustic bikes.  Will we get the most out of the red and blacks on normal bikes in 2-3hrs (we're regular MTBers and reasonably fit) or is ebikes the better option?

Any sensible suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Only been there once, but I felt there was a lot of fairly boring filler on the red lap. Lots of it didn’t feel difficult enough to be red. The black sections were pretty good though. If I were you I think I’d probably take e-bikes  - would make the boring pedally sections less boring. It felt like they could do with a section that took you from the end of the last black back round to the start of the first black section so you could repeat the good bits without all the chaff.

E-bikes probably a good plan if you’ve got the option.

I’d suggest doing all of the blacks if your group are up for it - they are broadly similar to reds at most other places. Not technical but jumpey, so just slow down and roll the jumps then all good.

Re use of the term “acoustic” bikes…. You should be slapped in the face with a haddock repeatedly.

I'd do one loop with all of the red stuff and one loop with all of the black. I'd then do another couple of loops with the bits I enjoyed most.

☝️

Ditto with Black sections. 🤔

Fun place though.

I don't know the place that well but always come away disappointed so if I had the choice (which I don't), I'd take the ebikes so you can loop the better bits a few times.

I have a memory of some sections with really steep climbs part way round that just felt punishing but I've no idea whether that was red or black, plus we were on day 3 of riding.

A few years ago I took two people who had never ridden off road before and they both managed a lap of the blue and a lap of the  red.

They were not notably fit and rode most of the hills. It's not hard.

I would leave the mobility bikes at home and ride a bicycle. I have done it on a rigid singlespeed.

its fun on an ebike, you can really easily repeat the good bits, and just do what you want.

I'd do the red loop but take all the black options, and repeat the bits you enjoy - if you look at a map you can see the fireroads and how to use them to get back to the top of the bit you just came down.

I quite like the Red. One big climb to get going then it's mostly downhill, another short climb and you're on the homeward stretch.

The blacks are fun, but do make the climbing feel a bit like prugatory as they basically loop down to the bottom of the hill and up again where the red contours along roughly halfway. The place is rammed with E-bikes and I suspect that's why. The black isn't the blackest, but it's a step up in fitness from the red at least. And in places I think unrelentingly jumpy even if they're all rollable.

You have plenty of time, no need for e-bikes unless you want to. I prefer to miss the first black and head to the natural selection trails and do all three of those, and maybe add on another if I fancy a fourth climb. When you get to the black jump lines, they are worth repeating, there are lots of cool bits to get right and some big-ish jumps if you hit everything. There is also a very cool drop at the intersection of red / blue / black to play on that can be anything from a few feet to 12 foot odd if you want to go bigger. I really enjoy Degla nowadays, great place, we may cross paths too, I will be there with my daughter. Red Propain and Canyon Neuron 😀

Slightly derailing the thread, I rode the "Worlds End" loop with MrsReady a couple of weeks back, and thoroughly enjoyed it - more  so than the official trails.  I started in Llangollen, but it's easy enough to do from Llandegla, just dip out on the 3mile climb.  The loop we rode was about 16 miles all in, but might have a few cheeky bits

Not my video, but this gives you an idea..

You shouldn't really ride the offa dyke path. It's a foot path and not meant for bikes!!

Only joking. It's amazing. Views are sublime and single track is wonderful. MuST be one of the nicest pieces of trail in Wales. Up there with Doeith Valley.

Actually, the bit through Llandegla is a bridleway.

The cover image of that video, though, isn't Offa's Dyke and is very cheeky.
