First attempt at tubeless, WTB 45 riddler on WTB rim on Arkose D3, I’ve got the stans kit, got the tyre to snap into place with the track pump and soap and water and I can get it up to about 50psi but there is a big air leak from around the valve. I’ve not put any fluid in yet, will the fluid sort it or do I need to do something else first?
Air leak around the valve could well mean the tape is leaking I'm afraid.
Either the valve is not sitting right / a bad fit, or more likely your tape is not airtight - air is getting past the tape somewhere else and the place you see it escaping is around the valve.
Obv check the valve is seated well, nice and tight, but if you taped it yourself it's prob best to retape. If it's a rim strip and you have no tape then that's not an option, so add sealant and see if this does the job. Can do sometimes.
What do you mean by the valve being seated well? Should I push it right down into the hole or does it sit proud inside the rim?
You can use pliers to tighten the valve ring to get a good seal.
Also my 2018 Arkose leaked air at the rim weld, sealant resolved this (both wheels).
2nd one has gone up first time but turns out I’ve a puncture in the top of the tread!
Sealant should sort the puncture.
I usually push the valve into the rim with a ball ended Allen key while tightening the lock ring.
As per comments above, leaks at the valve are usually air that’s leaked at the tape somewhere else on the rim. You can try chucking the sealant in though and see if it seals. I’ve done that plenty of times I admit.
When fitting the valve push down on it when tightening. Makes it easier. You can use pliers but it's easy to over tighten and ruin that valve. Also means you may not be able to remove it again without pliers which is not helpful when you need to revert to a tube miles from home 🙄.
Assuming this is road tubeless every time I've got a tyre to seal with sealant that was leaking around the valve it has only lasted a short while before failing again. If the tape is wrong better to redo it.
I pushed the valve down tighter and put the sealant in, it holds for a bit then weeps again, I’ll have to re tape that one going on the above advice. The fluid fixed the puncture straight away so that ones fine. What a load of aggro, and these are tubeless ready rims and tyres too. Thanks all for your advice.
