Right tech people, help needed pls.
What's the cheapest way to get live tracking so when I'm out on the bike, the family can see where I am? Does it exist?

If you are assured of a mobile data signal then something like Endomondo will work.
If not, then you need a SPOT Tracker.
Have you got a garmin? I use my 510 linked to my phone and use live track on the garmin app. Seems to work okay, as long as there's an Internet signal. The wife's not very good at getting the kettle on for my arrival though.
What electronic devices and GPS enabled devices do you currently possess?
If you have an iPhone you could use the "Find my Friend" feature, simply enable location services for the device and for the program. Not sure if there's anything similar on Android. There are also apps such as Glympse which upload speed and the last few locations as a breadcrumb trail.
If you have one of the newer Garmins then they have live tracking, the 510 & 810 do so presumably units like the 520 do so as well. You do need your phone with you as well for this to work.
I use a Spot Tracker - you can share live updates over the web plus it can send OK text messages with location to pre-configured numbers and doesn't need a mobile signal.
Yeah, that would help, I have a smartphone and a garmin 500
Will they really look?
My missus has said such a thing would be good in the past, but then I know she's only saying it, if I am out riding she's watching shite on TV and adding to the sea of vapid toss on social media...
That's as far as her technological ability stretches, constant updates on my position will just annoy and confuse her...
She would only care if I was late.
@dovebiker - I've a SPOT tracker as well but it isn't cheap, roughly £100PA plus the initial cost of the unit. Then again current smartphone deals aren't cheap either but the OP is likely to already have one so that wouldn't be any (or little) extra cost.
As Colin says, if you are guaranteed a mobile signal use an app otherwise SPOT is your only practical option.
Follow mee app on your smartphone uses the phones GPS
Interesting question on the phone app vs Garmin/phone link; which uses the least battery power?
I turned on the follow mee app in may not bothered to turn it off as it doesn't seem to use much battery it only uses the GPS for 10 seconds every 10 minutes
Hmm, the phone app needs the GPS chip to run but live track needs bluetooth, not sure which is greediest.
That's the same (default) resolution as SPOT and should be sufficient for most purposes.rob - Member

I found that glympse is much more reliable than a garmin plus phone as the garmin seems to like disconnecting. Battery life on the phone seems better that way as well and my wife doesn't need to remember any logins
I use the Road ID app. Was free, just start it when i start my Strava, sends a sms at the start/end of the ride and a link so should they want and signal willing, can track where i am.
Has a few other handy features such as pushing ICE contact info to front page of phone.
Google location history. It's free. Not bad when you have lost your phone too...
I have an app I wrote for android if you want to try it.
I wrote it for myself as a bit of a challenge, its not really good to publish.
It texts your grid reference to a mobile number you provide every 200 meters or so you move.
Its compiled on a generic key, so not really for sharing to lots of people. But like I say the offers there.
Use google+ on your phone, share your precise location with family. Your family can track you through their own G+ accounts. Free and availabilie with tech you have.
I've got a Garmin 520 so generally use Garmin Connect LiveTrack however Google+ location works well if you don't want to use a Garmin. Never had a problem with battery drain using either method on an Xperia Z5 Compact.
