I was a super market lastnight and after paying was issued with my green "token of conscience" to go and give to whichever charity I felt most deserved it...
one of the choices was The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust.
After reading their blurb I went and gave my money to another cause, my Missus was apparently appauled.
"They're trying to improve kids safety on bikes! and you're well into bikes and you have children, how can you not support them?!"
My response was predicatble
"I saw nothing in their statement about campaigning for better training for cyclists or drivers, about encouraging the use of lights or other means of making child cyclists more visible at night, about campaigning for or advising on better cycle lanes or routing to improve safety...
They seem to be fixated on one issue, Helmets, which every child with a bike and their parents are already fully aware of. I already wear a helmet and so do our kids, so exactly what do we expect form this charity? Increased awarenes of something that everyone is aware of?"
She loves my lectures...
STW has drilled these arguments into me to the point where I can reel them off at will now...
But was I wrong in my assessment, do they do more than just tell kids to wear helmets?
Did they deserve my little green token?
nope
I always wear a helmet and will always make my son and wife wear them too but I am equally fully aware they are not a panacea and will not save my life\me from injury in all cases but they certainly my help lessen some some of the time.
by a paediatric nurse who through her work saw the devastation that head injury can cause not only to the child but to the whole family
I but she's seen plenty where kids were wearing helmets too
so not the right answer imo either
