32t chainring is as big as I go normally but I have got a triple chainset on one bike because 32x11 is a bit low for fast riding. Trouble is the 44 outer spends more time gouging rocks than pulling the chain. Was thinking of a 38 or 40 compromise but I've not seen any 4bolt outer rings in that size, wondered if this DH lite one would do the job with out being too heavy/crap shifting, or if there are any other options?

Did wonder about swapping to 22/36 but gonna have to drop into granny ring a lot more. I'll probably switch to a 2x10 system eventually but not for a good while yet.

I find 24/36 and 11-34 spot on for general riding - haven't spun out offroad yet.

36/38/40 are all available (TA Chinook for one), they're technically middle rings, but will work as outer rings.

However, I'd say it's not worth having a 22/32/40, triple, I'd do as you say and run a 22/36 double, you're not gonna be shifting on the front any more than you will with a triple, you'll have to drop out of the 40 long before you would out of the 36 anyway.

Didn't think you could use a middle in outer position.
I see your point about shifting njee but another reason for not going 22/36 was that climbing in middle ring the suspension feels better, it's an ETSX so not as bad in granny as my heckler single pivot but still a bit bob-y

Make yourself an Excel spreadsheet of chain ring against sprockets. You don't need to worry about inches or whatever. Just look at the ratios and compare what you use the most of and how other combinations could give other ratios. Also review how much duplication there is. Should give you an idea of what you might really want and really use.

For a reason that escapes me right now - I have 34/24 - 11/32

seems to cover most things I need to do

Didn't think you could use a middle in outer position.

I used a TA middle in the outer position for a couple of weeks while I waited for the right inner. Worked alright, no chain drop pin, so you could get the chain wedged behind the crank arm, shouldn't be an issue otherwise.

I can lend /give you a 36 middle and also a 11-34 cassette-so you can still use middle for climbing-you know it makes sense 😉
Serious you loose very few ratios using a 22 -36 last three gears iirc?

Double checked Sheldons gear calc, a 36t only looses the easiest cog compared to a 32 but gains 2mph @ 60rpm and 3-4 @ spinout, guess I can put up with that. 22 to 36 shift OK at the front? Was gonna use XT but looks like they are hard to get in 36 so TA maybe.

Not bothering going up to a 34cassette, those are 30g extra, screw that 🙂
Just need a light bash now.

I run TA 24-38-Bash and an 11-34 block and rarely ever feel lacking in range. Best change I ever made.

You could always use a Capreo hub and its nine tooth sprocket giving you a gear of 92 inches with a 32 ring

22 / 36 with a 11 / 34 cassette here.

I do notice the extra gap and shifting is OK rather than great. I find I use 1 - 5 in the granny ring and all of the 36. I do sit and spin not mash a gear tho. For me its easiest to go into granny and 4 or so at the bottom of a climb and then just shift on the cassette - going back to the middle ring at the top - this avoids shifting chainrings part way up the climb. granny 5 is about middle 2 IIRC

deore 36 are available for much cheapness to try out to see if you like it.

Will bring my SLX 36 weds and you can use that and see what you think. I dont have the legs for 36 so clearly you have no chance 8)

Pah, you need to MTFU, I've not come out of my 42 for the last 4 rides at least! 🙂

If you are worried about weight then don't have a bash at all, I run 22/36, shifts fine and the chain stays on without a bash on there. Without the big ring I didn't find I was hitting the bash much anyway. I use Blackspire 36t rings as they seem tough and last a long time.

I've gone to 22/36, and I think the cassette is an 11-34. Using a double specific front mech (SLX), the shifting is bang on. You don't miss the extra gears on the top end, but I find I do miss them at the bottom end of the middle ring. You do have to use the granny a little more because of that.
