Looking for ideas on a good route from Linthwaite (Colne Valley) to Cleckheaton.

I know there are a few bike paths (Greenways) around and wondered if anyone had a better idea than me of how to link up a good commuter route as an alternative to the road?

Cheers.

OK in summer with the canal towpath and greenways along the old railway tracks. No chance in winter unless you have some serious lights and beware that some of the tracks run through some pretty scary parts of town after dark.

Serious lights yes.

How scary? Cleckhuddisfax never struck me as scary?

As I live midway between the 2 here goes : Down canal or riverside path (milnbridge) through Town .Then either Canal or Fartown to Bradley Greenway to bradley. Cut out Bradley lights either by Canal or cutting across to Fixby road and down a bridleway onto calder + Hebble canal towards Brighouse. Cut through Armitage trading estate ( footbridge over Calder) and out onto Dewsbury road To Holiday Inn. Up steep hill past hotel to Clifton. Turn right towards Hartshead Church . Cross windybank lane down Harepark lane to Hightown . Finally down Hightown Road to Cleckheaton.
Avoiding A62 as much as possible.

never thought I'd see cleckhuddersfax in an STW thread. What a dump. I do remember not long after they opened the old railway cycle route someone strung a wire across it.

The best thing about cleck is its proximity to the M62.

I'd probably just stick to the road and go up to Ainley Top, follow the A643 to Brighouse then up past the golf club on the other side and down through Scholes. I was until recently commuting from Leeds to Manchester (once a week) and did the stretch from Cleck to Ainley Top as part of my route. It's OK, never felt too busy compared to the A62 alternative.

If you fancied something more adventurous you could go round the other side of Huddersfield, and work something out through Honley, Farnley Tyas, Fenay Bridge, Kirkheaton and Hopton then across to Hartshead. Nice road riding up there but probably a bit of a trek!

I'd defo avoid the greenways after dark too.

Thanks.

Will probably be trying to do this 2 or three days a week and use car to deliver/Collect shirts etc on other two days.

Hope to be moving soon. Then I just need to find all the good cheeky trails around Linthwaite.

Loads of cheeky trails round linthwaite area, you'll have great fun finding and linking together into a ride, used to live at Cowlersley and still managed to find a great one the other day 1/2 mile from my old house that I'd been riding/driving past for years!

Can't disagree that Cleckheaton is a dump.

Colne valley is quite nice though IMHO. A little post industrial but mostly not much there until you fall out of the end of it into Saddleworth.

Rubbish. You just need to know where to look, and not be picky about being cheeky. I was out with some lads off here the other week and they showed me some new stuff, and I've been riding here for 20+ years, on and off.

Mint,

You have got me all wrong.. Not saying there is no riding just not much else, hence can't be considered a dump.

Wouldn't be moving there otherwise.

Oh right I see, sorry! 😳

Yeah, I don't think it's a dump either. It's a bit tatty round the edges, maybe, but I quite like it that way. Feels lived in and friendly to me...
