In my dotage I can't remember how long it took me to get to the river crossing. In my defence, the last time was on a Marin Eldridge Grade...I am going to ML a gold Duke of Edinburgh group over the river next week. Hardtail or cyclocross?

Not long. Less than an hour - terrain is good and will be CX able.

Short enough that I wouldn't worry which bike I'd taken for those tracks.

Is there scope for an extended return back? Take the MTB and go exploring?

I did it a couple of weeks ago on a fully loaded bike, into a headwind, and it took me 50mins (according to Strava) from Linn of Dee to the Geldie Burn crossing.

As above, me and Mrs FOG will be going that way in a couple of weeks and she will be on her hybrid so cx would be fine
