Dragged one of these out the cupboard at the weekend, and it was ace! Doesn't look like they make em anymore however, so what did specialized replace it with?

Both Clutch and Butcher look far to heavy for a trail tyre.

Thanks

Didn't they replace the Eskar with Purgatory?

I had an Eskar on the Pitch and used it til it wore out or the sidewalls split anways.

Replaced it with an Ardent which I found to be near identical in almost every sense.

Just had my last ride on Eskars this weekend. They're past their best and a few sketchy moments means the Purgatorys waiting in the wings will be deployed before the next ride. They were a great tyre.

Odd. I had a pair of Eskars that lasted one ride. The latter part thereof was made up mainly of me swearing at them. Hated them. S'pose it takes all sorts!

Had a Eskar2 on the back, moved it to the front and replaced with a Purgatory which rolls & climbs better, what's not to love?

It's one of those tyres that are great on the BACK (fast-rolling), decent volume, lightish, etc. Sidewalls are about as chewing-gum.

Saying that I wouldn't trust it on the front.

Having run Eskars for nearly 3 years i've just bought some Purgatory tyres.
2.2 folders.
They feel fast, and seem to have a little more grip through kitty litter relative to the eskar 2.3's with the same wheels at 30 psi.

The Butcher control looks similar, but a bit on the soft side. Can't appear to buy them anywhere anyway!

S-works ones that came on the Enduro? They had paper thin sidewalls. The Eskar control armadillos are much, much better.

The 2013 Purgatory has side blocks more like the Eskar, is 2.3 rather than 2.2 (both actual sizes not comedy ones) and is apparently faster rolling than the current one. Looks good!
