Discovered on a dog walk today that there's miles and miles of canal side trail near ny new house.... soft ground, but perfect for a long wander from my front door.

Though a big tyred (but not necessarily full fat) trail hardtail might suit, and I have a cycle to work coming up.... is there anything out there like a Kramous?

I know there's the Stooge - that's one option, but ideally I'd get a full bike through cycle to work /

The Stooge is nothing like a Krampus.

You'll need to explain why they're so wildly different

The Stooge is like a cheap Jones copy.
The Krampus is like a 29+ tank from the Surly boys. 😡

That new Genesis springs to mind. 🙂
Salsa Beargrease...

You can stick a 29+ on most rigid 29ers. 😉

As above, Genesis Longitude, or our ex-demo Krampus which would be in-budget and available on C2W.

That explains your opinion, and dislike of the stooge, but further to HG's point, why are they so different physically?.

Other opinions are of course available 😉

Honourablegeorge, It sounds to me like a Genesis Longitude would be ideal for your budget and needs. If you can try to get a set of proper 29+ tyres thrown in the deal though, the stock tyres on the Longitude don't have the benefits of a bigger tyre such as a Maxxis Chronicle or Surly Knard.

Also, as Takisawa2 said, you can fit a 29+ wheel/tyre to the front of most rigid 29ers. Charge Cooker rigid...

A big front wheel and a slightly fat rear does not make a 29+ !! The stooge is a great bike that does feel similar in ride to a jones diamond, but that is no bad thing. It is not , nor was it ever designed to be 29+ bike, hence the skinny little rear and super short chsinstays. You'd struggle to get a 2.4 in the back on a wide rim with decent clearance. The krampus is a different beast. Its meant to be a 29+ and rides like a massive bmx and just monster trucks over stuff.

Currently have a Stooge, had 2 Jones - prefer the Stooge.

But to get back to the OP a Longitude really does sound spot on for you.

I tried a Krampus.
Having 29+ both ends makes for really chuckable beast, that's a lot more capable than you'd think.
But having lashed out on the Niner, there was none left for a Krampus. 😐
Thinking of having the Niner modified to run 29+ out back, but if this 650b+ ever comes off, that might be worth a look.

Taz.
That's what I said but a bit more tongue in cheek. 8)
Nowt wrong with either of them just very different.
I liked the Stooge I tried.
It's also cheaper than a Jones.
I liked the Krampus I tried.
I've owned several Surly tanks and liked them.
