…thinner at the thumb? I like DMR DeathGrips but I’d rather the mushroom bit at the thumb end was narrower. The Specialized SIP XL on my Levo are exactly like this but sadly they’ve been discontinued. The thickness, stickiness/softness (I prefer thick soft DeathGrips), single collar, main pattern, waffle under the fingers are all great on both (good with gloves or not).
Any suggestions?
Hold a lighter to the mushroom bit?
Have you tried Renthal’s in super soft? Otherwise ODI Elites look similar to what you want.
I always end up back on ODI Longnecks but I don't use lock ons. Slipped onto Fatbars with GT85 or IPA they've never moved in any weather conditions.
They did a soft compound version which was nice but not sure if you can still get them. I had the S&M BTM grips (made by ODI) on my stolen DJ bike which I enjoyed for a while. Very similar, large diameter, soft rubber. I'll probably get some more to get some actual use out of them.
Renthal Super Tacky's are nice but only with gloves. They feel pretty minging on bare hands.
Odi Long necks, lock on or normal, both great.
I always end up back on ODI Longnecks
Same here, been running ODI Longneck non lock on's since the early 90's
Used to fit with hairspray but these days they are fitted with Screwfix's finest No Nonsense Spray Glue
Not moved in 2 years and the bike is used in all weathers
Something must have happened in grip rubber technology since the 90's. They just don't swivel around like they used to. I bet you could mess them up and ruin them but if you fit them properly and let them dry, they're rock solid. I'm convinced the textured finish on a Rental bar helps but I haven't used anything else for years.
If they're the same as standard on a Kenevo I've got a couple of un used pairs somewhere in the garage.
I'll have a look for you later.
Might be an obvious question but are you using thin or thick death grips now?
i have the same want, my deathgrips asre nearly dead
I'll be buying these next:

thank me later 🙂
I was a longtime deathgrip fan but lbs had run out of black ones so I got a set of Burgtec bartender grips, they are amazing, comfy grippy and so comfy in the super soft version
+1 for the burgtecs
Really impressed
I recently swapped from ODI Gwinn 1s to Burgtec Bartender Pros as the Gwinns were starting to hurt being so firm. I haven't yet got used to them being so thick, first ride out they gave me a lot of hand pain which I can only assume is down to the increased diameter as they're lovely and soft. Not had the problem since soit could just be my lack of riding.
Not very helpful I'm afraid - just reinforcing the Burgtec = nice grips opinions above. ;o)
Not tried em, but the Loose Riders grips look like a less pronounced version of Deathgrips. Looks like they only come in silly colours

Chromag wax for me
Some good suggestions, thanks!
Stu, if can have a look that would be brilliant - I think they were standard on a lot of Specialized's trail/enduro bikes. I was quite annoyed when I tried to buy some new ones a few months back. If you also have the same era saddle kicking around I'll buy that off you too because I like that almost as much as the grips (I was amazed to not have to change the grips and saddle on the Levo)!
Thick+soft Deathgrips for me - most grips are too skinny. The Burgtecs don't have the waffle underneath do they? AMS Berm look good if the compound is good. I don't think the Longnecks will be grippy enough, too easy to twist your hand around the mushroom ribs. I seem to be happy riding gloveless on grips that are pretty hard/abrasive (I only ride gloveless on short rides/commute when its warmer though). ODI Elite Pro look like a contender.
It's interesting to note all the details that make DeathGrips work so well for me - a key thing is that they don't have an outer collar but also they don't have some kind of flared end instead, so you can use the full width of the grip without a pressure point on the outside of your hand.
cheif.
Yes mate I have an un used pair.

Oxford Driver Lockon?
Sounds like you're sorted now but also worth looking at Gusset S2 in super soft in future too:

The Specialized SIP XL on my Levo are exactly like this but sadly they’ve been discontinued
Bugger, I didn't know they'd been discontinued. I've used nothing but those since getting a pair as standard spec on my 2014 Enduro. Perfect grip for me. Bookmarking this for future (and if anyone else has spare pairs they're willing to offload once chief is sorted out, let me know).
Some more good suggestions - the Gusset G2 Extra Soft look excellent as they're 32mm thick. I think the Oxford ones are a bit too skinny (not sure about the grip of the mushroom top half either). PNW pattern looks really nice but again a bit skinny.
Big fan of DeathGrips and Burgtecs, but thoroughly unimpressed with the PNWs, they're not right
5 mins with a craft knife and a new set of deathgrips will give you EXACTLY what you want.
Deity Knuckleduster is another similar option.
"5 mins with a craft knife and a new set of deathgrips will give you EXACTLY what you want."
If I only had to do it to one then I would - but if I've got to do both then they have to perfectly match or it'll annoy me as I ride. Not a looks thing, just me being too particular about how things feel!
Has no one mentioned that they sell Death Grips without the mushroom bit? I've had them before but don't mind the "flange" as it doesn't really get in the way for me.
John, I don't know why it's called the mushroom bit, but the mushroom bit is the ribs covering about an inch of grip where your thumb goes, not the flange at the inner end of the grip.
The Deity Knuckleduster is the one I'd seen and couldn't remember. Looks like there are a few good options!

The ribs look like the underside of a mushroom 🍄
Silly me!
I always thought the flange bit as referred to as the mushroom bit 🙂
I liked my brief go on the Burgtec grips and Ergon do some nice ones too.
