Looking at Terra Nova Laser 1 and Nordisk Telemark
any opinions?
I'm quite a big unit so a bit of room is nice
prices I have found are £255 and £289 respectively
thanks!
Laser 2 is so worth the extra weight for the extra room
MSR hubba is roomy for a 1-man, and a bit easier to pitch well (single-hoops take a lot more care on uneven ground to get right).
I use the 2 man MSR Hubba Hubba as my 1 man tent but I'm happy to carry the extra weight for the extra space.
I've got the 1 man MSR Hubba NX - got it second hand and I love it - super light and easy to put up - but not sure I would have wanted to pay full price for it. Nice roomy porch (comparatively) for cooking etc. Pitching the inner first not ideal in bad weather though.
The Alpkit Ordos 2 looks a great tent but might be a bit too heavy.
Have a look at a Trekkertent, lightweight AND roomy, especially the XL version. Options start at £165.
Edit, there was a six weeks wait recently when I wanted one.
Wild Country Zephyros for light-ish and cheap. Also comes in XL format.
Im not that big but have had a laser comp 1 and an akto, but sold both.
IMO i dont like that the tent slopes down towards your head, giving minimal room above your head when lying on a mat. Not a nice place to be on a rainy day.
Id go for something slightly bigger and heavier.
Got a nordisk telemark lw 2. 950grams. Tiny pack. 6'3". Love it.
You can trade any old tent with terra nova and get 30% off!
We've just bought a Solar Photon 2 trading in a 39yr old tent that belonged to the inlaws. We haven't used the new yet though
got a vaude Taurus ultra light 2p , its a bit squashed for 2 people but for 1 person its a perfect 3 season tent , lots of room. a reasonable porch can pitch in 5min (only 2 poles) weighs in at just under 1.5kg, had for about 3yrs now no leaking just reproof at the end of every year
What, where, when are you using it? And what is your definition of lightweight?
I've the Laser comp and have slept two in it but it's a squeeze and it helps if you are friends 😆 It's fine for a night or two but after a few nights in a Scottish gale you'll wish you had something bigger.
I've also a Vango 2p tent, can't remember the model now but I don't think they make it any longer, split between two it's not a problem carrying it. Lots more room than the Laser and with a huge vestibule. I think it's 2Kg +/- a couple of hundred grammes.
Watch out for those tents where they've saved weight by using a superlight material for the groundsheet - you'll need to factor in a protection mat to both cost and weight.
It's surprising just how well some of the non-specialist tents stand up to things. We camped on Pabbay (uninhabited island at southern end of the Outer Hebrides) for a week. Half the week was sunny and calm, the other half was a storm. One of the tents was one of the big Go-Outdoors frame tents - it stood up to it no problem.
