Looking to use the collective wisdom to help a friend in the search for a lightweight trail wheel set. Budget is set at £600 (less would be great, a bit more could be OK) and target weight is under 1500g.

Wheels for a 150mm 29er, XD driver, probably Nobby Nic 2.6/2.3 tyres combo. The rider is about 60kg maximum and most of the riding will be red grade Scottish trail centres and occasional natural riding.

Best option I can find is probably the Newmen SL XA 25 Evolution -25mm inner width, 28 hole straight pull, Sapim D-Light spokes, 1460g claimed weight.

I'm not really familiar with the brand/wheelset - would it be tough enough for the above described riding? Any better/lighter options that should be looked at?

There are these in the classifieds:

XD driver would be about another £50

Have a play around on the Action Sports wheel configurator. Some nice DT Swiss 240 hubs and light rims can be custom built for around 620 euros.

What 55kg person needs a 150mm 29er to ride red routes at trailcentres?

I mean come on, someone has to be that guy...

Was going to be my suggestion as well, not used them yet, but hear good things and is where I'm going to be spending my money in the near future.

Wow sorry for butting in but action sports looks awesome,  I will certainly try them when new wheels are required.

Those Newmen wheels look really interesting, though the 30mm ones would seem more appropriate for a 2.6in tyres and 150mm travel bike.

Plus they make me think of...

Wtb koms make for a pretty nice wideish but lightish rim and pretty cheap if you're prepared to self build. I've just built one for the front wheel of my commencal 29er. Not sturdy enough on the back for me on that bike, but someone lighter would probably be ok unless they make a habit of smashing into pointy edged rocks.

At that weight sapim d light spokes would likely be stiff enough and save a touch of weight. Pair with hubs of your choice. i29s are really nice but you could drop a little weight by going narrower on the rear rim. Should make a really nice all round wheelset- I doubt you'd get much lighter without going to really racey rims or carbon.

Cheers guys - I use ActionSports myself by think my friend would prefer a simple click and buy set than having to configure them if that makes sense.

I guess Dt240's with some decent rim would be a good option though. I used the 240 hits myself and think they are pretty much the best you can get.

Cheers for link rugbydick 🙂

Can't believe these haven't gone yet but I do have a XD freehub that I can swap over or available for £50 extra.

I have the Mavics (27.5 flavour boost) and I’ve been really impressed with them so far. The Quest tyres are fine if it’s bone dry and you don’t want to do anything radical like braking 😉 I’ve stuck a 2.3 MM/NN combo on there and they make a nice profile. Mine were from wiggle, with cash back £580 I think. Dunno if they still have any.

If those action sport 240s had a 6 bolt boost option, I'd be on them like a tramp on chips, but I just can't see it.

Onzadog, pretty sure they do. I'll post a link in a bit if needed when the other half is off the laptop. I have a parts spreadsheet with links for the new build.

The option will be there but it will be under a different listing.

I recently had a pair of boost 6 bolt 240s on EX511s built and delivered in under a week from actionsports, worked out far cheaper than I was quoted elsewhere.

They arrived sooner than some UK companies pulled their finger out to give me a price.

Maybe the problem is me searching on my phone rather than a laptop, still can't find it.

Hunt? and save some money to spend on rubber, IMO 2.6 you need to be on wide rims though

I don't work for them BTW:)

IS are the 6 bolt version.

chakaping, £580 delivered, 511s/240s boost with DT Comp spokes and black DT brass nipples. I was being quoted more than that over here for Pro4s.

The 240s are silky smooth, still can’t get over having a near silent hub after years of Hopes.

I'll have a set of brand new Syncros XR2.0 wheels for sale in a few days, straight off a 2018 Scott Scale.

[both boost, XD driver, 6-bolt, 28h, 25mm wide]

message me if your mate is interested. Not sure on price yet though. Need to check.
