I'm thinking suspension-capable, but might run rigid sometimes.
Don't need masses of tyre clearance.
Bonus points for rack/mudguard mounts.
Cheap would be good, so I'm reluctantly ruling out Ti.

Scandal or Inbred for VFM. Might be lighter to go for rackless stuff like seat packs, frame bags and bar harness and something from Giant.

I use a 29er Inbred, maybe not the lightest out there but I really can't fault it.

Jumping in, but they look like Salsa Enabler Forks (... having just built a Swift with a set of them on).

OCB is correct they are Salsa Enabler forks ... 135mm spacing so rear wheel in the front. In this case it's a SS wheel incase my gears decide to implode 😉

They are a brilliant bike, handle like they are on rails as well off road, have a look on here for some photos of mine and on mtbr forum for a load of stuff on them. Latest ones can run a sus fork as well but would probably look a bit daft with drops.
Probably not the lightest thing ever but they make up for it with decent handling and versatility.

Ebay chinese carbon 29er or direct from hongu, dengfu, flyxii etc etc.

Budget for import duty etc.

Lots of people on MTBR with these. Worst case it should come in under £300.

Cheap option: I just picked up a Voodoo Bokor 29 complete from halfords for 520 (sales + discount code), surprisingly decent kit on it, has rack mounts, takes sus forks etc.
