Had my ayups for a few years now, still like them and can't see any point getting anything else. Depends on just how much light you think you need i guess.
Just need to get out night riding more this winter

Light & Motion are doing Seca 1400, plenty of light and a good beam pattern.

got a set of ayups and they work, what more do you need them to do. They aren't the brightest or the cheapest but as a system they are probably one of the best solutions.

Seca 1400 for me as well, ran a 700 all last winter and was faultless.

Can't wait to see what 1400 lumens look like 🙂

It's like the Chinese route, only a bit closer to home:

Awesome amount of light per pound spent - can't wait for my mates to dig out their bigger brand stuff to have a proper compare. Light envy is a terrible thing.....

I'm in the process of finalising designs and ordering housings.

Other items in the pipeline too.

Did anyone from here see the 601 on loan at MM ?.

There may be a loaner going for the D2D also, if anyones interested.

Trout and I have been chatting and I reckon theres some good stuff to come out this coming season. His little triple looks promising.
I've been working on a triple too.

Keep watching out for Trout and I.

That light is well fugly. If £100 quid is the budget, then perhaps the light from SpokeBloke ?.

But I wouldn't rush, wait and see what Trout and I come up with. After all, its only July.

well my magicshine from china last year was tops and worked a treat. It was better than my huuuugely powerful HID lightsabre. I think it looks ace (but then I own an ellsworth so my taste is definitely on the ****ed side) and it'll be a very small unit which is nice.

I'm in no rush so lets see what's out there for winter, anything will be better than when i first started night riding (a set of eveready battery lights on a set of scott AT4 bars in the late 80's ) 😀

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I use to ride with 240 paper lumens, it seemed like loads 🙂 Now we're into 4 figures.

How things change, eah ?.

TazzyMTB.

Ha !, yeah, I was saying this to a mate of mine a few years ago, NV goggles. But if you saw what they looked like, no way I was going to turn up to a race with a pair of those on. 😆

Anyway, with the output from some lights now, if you were wearing NVGs, the ligths would probably damage them.

SFB reckoned my light was actually too bright !.

But yeah, NVGs, just think about it, all in the darkness, Spooky, Stealth !.

Had a sneak preview of the Exposure 6 pack at the Bonty, my god how bright? Its not a small unit but jesus it's like having a mini sun on your bars. Its so bright it could scorch the earth it lights up !!!

As a result it means some 2nd hand Big Daddy's so i think I'll pick up one of those 😀

From the guys who have tested the Micky mouse Bastid here is what you get for your extra money
a light which on paper has more lumens but in real life throws less light down the trail
and runs for less time on a charge . not in their opinion a step forward
over the £50 bastid . be far better buying 2 of the standard bastids .

Lights are getting far too powerfull if you ask me 😉

Quite fancy one of those new Exposures. Probably not the top of the range one but a Diablo Mk2 would be nice.

I was initially a bit underwhelmed by the first Diablo but I really like it now. I did the Dunwich Dynamo last week and, while my NiteRider Storm is ace, it's also heavy with the battery packs and someting integrated and bright would be the perfect answer. 🙂

Evening trout. Interested in what you have planned as my troutlite was fine last year at D2D, remember meeting you briefly as i was about to go out for a lap. Only problem is i have to throttle it this year as i seem to be doing it solo, so something as a back up would be good.

Already running a Seca 1400 here. At 24-12 I was running it on low and did the whole night on the one battery pack, treated myself to the occasional section on the full 1400.

What impresses me with the L&Ms is not so much the power but how clean the beam pattern is.

Lot of £££ though.

I haven't been impressed with the P7 light, I used it at MM and tried to use it at 24/12 where it promptly cut out leaving me to do a lap in the dark, for those of you that want a laugh this was how happy I was about that Joolze capturing me at the end of that lap. After that I borrowed my team mates joystick with 240 lumens which I much preferred to the P7 despite it's 900 lumens. The joysick seamed to use the light so much better whereas the p7 just spreads it out far too much (and mine seams way down on power compared to another mates P7 torch.) So for me it would seam you get what you pay for.

the first one is very difficult to fit an optic to specially the optics which work best for the MCE.

the second 7 led jobbie has promise and I am waiting for some more info about its control features .
it has the ability to switch the centre 3 leds or all 7 but dimming is as yet still waiting for clarifcation and depends on a minimum amount of units purchased.
yes this may be the engine for my badger burner in the future but it is as yet unavailable .
The price though is about the same as a 7 led board and a Maxflex driver.

Well, if you want to get in early, I have some units available, and I'm sure Trout has too.

Some people on here probably missed it, but I placed two 601's in the classifieds recently, at discount.

Still got one left.

Well, I FINALLY got round to getting my Lumi LED conversion sorted out in time for the 24/12. This was after Chucky@vortexracing's group order (much) earlier this year.

Got it finished too late to do any reliability testing or even run-time tests, so just used it and it was fine. Plenty of light - especially coupled with the 20W Lumi halogen.
The diagram that (I think) Trout provided me for wiring up with a 3-way switch was spot-on (thank you Trout) and allowed off-high-mid running.

Next time I take the bike to Thetford I'll probably take the LED with me (and my mates that I also converted) and run them both on full for a run-time test. I suspect they'll outlast the ride though, to be honest.

I'll get some pics sorted at some point & post them up. At the moment I'm not really sure whether the narrow or the mid lens is better. If the conversion proves reliable I'll be doing another one in time for the D2D and impending winter - although I suspect that running one LED lamp with the large Lumi battery will get me through the race without a recharge (in a pairs team).

I am debating whether to get a helmet light for this winter and am currently weighing up the options.

Is Thetford a local/regular ride for you ?.

L

Yeah, used to be once a week, generally on a Thursday evening. Kinda went off the boil for a while as everyone was always busy, but now trying to get back into it again.
Went last night and it was really dry & sandy. We stuck to the red & black, as I imagine at this time of year all the unmarked trails will be really nettley....

Luminious - we were there until about 8:30 last night (I know this as the chip shop had closed by the time I got home :o( ) and it was still plenty light enough not to need any lights. I reckon by 9 it might be getting a bit dull in some of the denser foresty bits.

I wanna take the lights along just for a run-time test, but shouldn't actually need them until mid/late September.

Bring your bucket and spade! Some of the corners are really deep sand and there was tyre wash-outs aplenty.

In answer to the "how birght are car headlights" question,

10W halogen ~ 250 lumens (on paper, in reality you only get about 2/3 of this on the road/trail due to lenses and inacurate/misleading data)

65W car main beam (you can buy a 100W but technical those are illegal IIRC) is therefore arround 1600 lumens.

The problem is a car light is directed down and to the side in an L shape so leaving oncoming drivers in a dark patch. Car lights are also bigger physicaly so don't look very bright when your staring at them.

Take a look at these the new Ray-3a light is now sorted and is brighter than the Exposure Maxs-D, see the photos, http://www.liteoption.com and its only 72g on your helmet.

For a car - about 700 lumens dipped, 1200 on main beam (standardish halogen).

No need to fret. Just save your pennies, and come September, you may be able to obtain a light from me or Trout. Either way, you'll have one heck of a light.

avDave2.

😆 Good one, yeah, fish not included.

If you must have a fish though, get yourself over to Angel Acquatics (where the pic and vid were made), Stuart will help you out with anything, hes part-fish, we think.
🙂
I inlcuded the fish, just in case people thought I was being tricky with photo-shop and a still image.

[img] [/img]

I don't think my photography skills are quite up there with Trout's, but you get the idea.
😉

Ignore the foam on the bar too, the owner had misplaced the proper rubber shim that comes with the light to allow it to fit smaller diameter bars 🙄

I normally suggest mounting the light next to the stem.

Cheers

L

Budget Option:

My mate just showed me 2 led lights he got from a pound shop, yes £1 each. Yeah, they're not 1000 lumins, but stick 10 along the bars and you might have something useable! This is untested, but for a tenner!?! Could even sick a few on you lid too!
