I’m looking at a shock upgrade for my Bird AM9. It’s currently got a Rockshox Deluxe on, 2018-2019 and I’ve been thinking of trying coil.
I’m between 65 and 68 kg kitted up depending if it’s a shorter or long ride and ride general trail centre stuff, including off piste and longer Scottish highland type rides.
What success have riders on the lighter side had with coil?
Cheers
Superb. My lad is 45-50kg and loves his coil on his GT Fury DH bike
I'm 5kg or so heavier than you but I've had a coil on my AM9 for probably two years now. It's much better.
If you happen to need or want a lightweight Nukeproof 325lb spring I have a spare to sell. I run mine at anywhere between 350 and 400lb..
I put a Cane Creek IL coil on my Norco Range and love it. I weigh 66kg or so and ended up with a slightly more stiff coil that was recommended for my weight, I think was recommended 350lb but was bottoming out on bigger hits / jumps so changed to 400 which works perfectly.
I’m 75kgs but loved the DHX2 coil I had on my Aether 7. It was ace vs the standard air shock. Better resistance to wallowing into the mid range, yet great plush small bump.
On a transition sentinel now and switched to coil but slightly struggling with bottoming the coil - but it’s amazing on small bump and mid stroke support. Think the bird has more progression - 30% vs the sentinel on 24%.
Light riders actually see some benefits that larger riders don’t. e.g. any annoying breakaway friction all but disappears with the removal of the air spring. I always go for a coil on the front in particular (62kg)
Sorry to hijack but could I ask, as a 60kg rider what coil shock should I be looking at for my Whtye T130?
Ive been wondering the same as the op about lighter riders and coil shocks for a while but it sounds like it’s a goer so any recommendations appreciated.
I'm not as light (75kg) but I love the Bomber CR on my AM9. It's a basic but very tuneable shock.
65kg or so here and love the RS Super Deluxe Ultimate I put on my Rallon. No downsides at all for me.
