I've just rebuilt a scandal frame, mainly to tidy up the parts bin. SS, like last time.

Christ, it's light ! Feels really light and an old set of fishing scales (available for sale or hire 😉 ) think it's 19-22 lb depending how much I jiggle them. It's not that I've been hefting around a deadweight recently; mostly I've been a roadie since September.

Flow rims (26), one hope and one old DT hub and 2.2 tyres (RR). XT brakes and an octalink XT chainset. V12 pedals. Granted, the bars are narrow but the seatpost & saddle are nothing posh at all.
(Oh, and an exotic carbon fork)

How much do we imagine it really weighs ?

If you try and state anywhere on the forum that your bike weighs less than 32lbs you will be derided for the quality of your scales. Just don't get into the "with or without pedals" debate.

probably about what you think.

a suspension fork and gears would add a few pounds and no one would question a 25lb alu hard tail.

Do I have to go out and ride it or can I just send strava the details and automatically get the KoMs ?

😐

My geared 29er Scandal with Reba forks, similar but bigger wheels, XT chainset, x9 1x10 setup, came in at 22lbs 8oz (on my mates Park digital scales.) Since had a much lighter saddle, seatpost and brakes and a few other carbon trinkets. Likely closer to 22lbs. So somewhere around 21 lbs doesn't sound too unreasonable for yours, even with the weighty V12's!

Funnily enough I got my Scandal out the shed for the first time in ages the other day and thought it weighed a tonne. But then most of my riding over the summer has been on a 16 lbs road bike.

Your scales vary by 15% when you jiggle them?

On the more relevant pick-up test, I reckon it's an 'ooooh'. Other bikes would be an 'mmmm' or an 'urrrgh'.

My three quid fishing scales only vary by 5g when jiggled, not to get into a "who has the more accurate cheap scales" contest but that 15% variance does sound a bit extreme. Though something in the 21lb region sounds right for that bike.

etc

Yeah, they're old fishing scales that my dad or brother left in the garage years ago. I reckon there's a tiny hint of rusty stiction. 😳

I'm offended that you reduced my entire post to a single "etc". I say you deserve your scaly stiction.

😉

Mate of mine had the full on magic scales, we both bought the same downhill frame, I built mine up with basically every component being lighter but his was mysteriously a full pound lighter. Apparently the difference between a small frame (his) and a medium (mine) was about 5lbs 😆

I don't think I have ever weighed a bike in my life. mrs_oab's Cannondale F900SL still manages the 'oooooh, that is light' every time I pick it up though.

not really sure I have - 'til yesterday

It's an interesting phenomenon though. I'd have thought that fishing scales would exaggerate (and that if anything, really old springs might go "stretchy") but it seems to have adapted itself to bike weighing

(My 2 girls have very similar bikes but one of those is also an "oooh" bike and the other just feels like a bike. The light one is, of course, red)

Don't, it's generally a disappointment!

I would think it is around 9kg (20lb) at best but all depends what seat, post, bars and especially wheels and tyres you have used as they can add up and you could be around 10kg+ (22b)

Getting a single speed to around 8kg takes some selective choosing of parts and under 8kg takes a lot of money. Mine weighs around 8kg (1400g wheels, SLR seat, carbon rigid forks etc,.) and to go any lighter I would really need to change the frame as the Ti frame and EBB come in at around 1650g which is pretty heavy but not changing it because I love it!.

Sub 8kg for a rigid SS shouldn't be too bad with careful selection of parts. But yes, a 1650g frame isn't the ideal starting point.

That's not far off my summer road bike frame…! (It is quite large, though.)

Heh. I used some luggage scales to weigh my Scandal - 2x10, AM 26", Reba, XT - came in at 21.8. Weighed them on Njee's stand scale thingy and it showed 22.8. I assumed all luggage scales weigh under to ensure you pay extra at the terminal...

That'll be the next emissions scandal: "consumer luggage scales sponsored by EasyJet"!

Or do they weigh over because they're fishing scales? "It was this big…" 😉
