Hi,
I have gone on the DT swiss website and they advise I need:
14 X 265mm
28 X 266mm
14 X 267mm
I am thinking of using DT competition spokes. Where is the best place to get them? Seems like rose bikes sell the 266mm cheaply, but most other places are much more expensive.
Can I just use 266mm for all of them? The precise lengths are: 265.30mm to 267.00mm
I've just had a similar dilemma. Bought 3/4 shorter length and 1/4 long length, so in your case 42 265mm and 14 267mm. I bought from rosebikes with 14mm nipples. However, I have since heard that the LB ERD can be out by 3 mm! So maybe not wise to buy in advance! I'm waiting for my rims and will just have to hope they fit.
1mm either side of the calculated spoke length is fine, but definitely get rims first then measure the ERDs yourself.
(I learned both these things from the Musson book, it's good and well worth the tenner or so to buy).
Just built up a budget pair of wheels where the calculator gave a spread from 293.5 to 296 bought a bulk lot of 295mm spokes, I was prepared to have to order at least another 16 or 32 in shorter sizes, but 295mm did the job just fine...
Always a bit of a gamble using spokes more than +/-0.75mm of the calculated values, I wouldn't want to go much further out than that build really but it worked out ok YMMV though.
Are you building yourself? I just left the spoke sourcing to the shop- partly because they're not having to buy in volume just for one wheel, but mostly so that it was their problem getting the lengths right.
I am getting my LBS to build them for me so I got the ERD measured by them ( Both 1mm out Vs what LB states on the web site) , and they advised on the spoke lengths I needed. I checked on the DT Swiss website and they came out with the same as the shop when I entered the ERD. The LBS do not have the lengths in stock so said it would likely be cheaper for me to source them. The DT website states I need:
265.60mm
267.00mm
266.60mm
265.30mm
If I get them all at 266mm I might be ok for most of them as they are within 0.75mm. The risk is the 267mm spokes.
I wouldnt be concerned with 1mm short. If the spokes are longer then they can stick out the end of nipple. Shorter and you'll have a little thread showing I suppose. Best to be short.
Have been wondering about getting Light Bicycle to do the wheel-building? Anyone done that?
Found silver on ebay for under £20 for all the spokes I need, so about £50 cheaper than anywhere online in black.
Slightly embarrasing question to be asking, but would silver spokes look ok with matt carbon rims and dark grey hubs?
Silver spokes will look fine.
Mine spokes are silver. Personally I prefer the look of silver spokes to black
Went with Silver, helped keep the costs down 🙂
Prices for peoples reference - all parts bought on ebay:
650b 38mm Rims - £315 including postage and duty - 880 grams
DT Swiss 350 Hubs - £92 - 136 grams + 272 grams
Spokes - £20 - 382 grams
Nipples - TBC - 20 to 55 grams
Build - £40
Total will £467 + a few quid, so good value. Not sure what the final weight will be, but around 1,690 to 1,725 grams is the expectation. Just need to decide whether to go for aluminum or brass DT Pro Lock nipples.

Disagree. Doesn't matter if spoke shows out end of nipple. But if short will compromise strength of nipple, head can pop off if not supported.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how long on average it takes to receive the rims (just looking to order rims not wheels) from ordering.
Cheers

Depends how far though, surely. Too far and you'll have run out of thread which is a Bad Thing I'd say.
Mine were ordered on 12June to be manufactured. Posted on 1July, arrived in UK customs 4July and I havent had any news from customs yet.
I've never worried about 1mm spoke length when building wheels.
Just make sure the rim dims are correct though.
I'd hold fire till they land here.
And brass nipples all the way.
Neiloxford, Where did you get DT350s for that cheap?
