Can anyone explain what LB mean when their ERD states.

“ 589mm (not including nipple head dimension)”

I want to use the DT Swiss Calc as I’m building up with 240 hubs, but not sure what ERD value I enter given their statement?

If in doubt measure it yourself.

Ask them direct. In my experience they're very good at dealing with queries.

As I understand it, ERD is measured to the end of a spoke that is completely threaded to the end of the threads on the nipple but not including the head of the nipple. I have used the ERD as supplied by Light Bicycle and found it to be fine.

Thanks. So basically I can just input the ERD as stated by LB straight into the DT Swiss calculator?

Wait til you get it, measure it how you expect it be measured and used by your fave calculator, then order the spokes.

I did it properly for the first 10 or so wheels I built, then, for the last two, I just took the manufacturers ERD (plus taking the explanation into account) and they were out far enough that I had to unlace and order different spokes.

I like it when manufacturers just refuse to tell you 🙂 My LBs were spot on what they put on the website but that was several years ago now

There are threads in the head of the nipple, so I'm not sure what you mean here.

I assume that what Light Bicycle are quoting is the distance from rim bed to rim bed (i.e. where the base of the nipple head sits).

The confusion arises because you want the spoke to be slightly longer than this as you want it to be threaded into the nipple head, so you need to be clear on whether your spoke calculator is adding this extra or whether the manufacturer is including it in their ERD.

Yeah, I was thinking the slot in the nipple head effectively removed the threads but that's not totally true, and there is some of the head below the slot.

This is where you want the spoke to be:
