My wife and I are 2 months in to a life without a car. Bea (my wife) has been writing a blog about it for anyone thats interested (link below).

I'm really enjoying not relying on a car, it means that I am getting more riding time in which has taken a real hit when our little boy was born. He likes the cargo bike and will go and get my jacket and his shoes so we can go out on the bike!
Pfff... Never had a car, until just 3 years ago.
Only because SWMBO ordered purchase. That puts me in 40 years without a car club, as my parents never had one.
Still best thing I ever seen was friend of mine doing full house removal by 15 miles with his bike and extrawheel trailer only 🙂
Cheers!
I.
Its quite astonishing what you can do without a car and with a little ingenuity
Biggest loads I have had on my (non cargo) bike include 27 m of copper pipe and IIRC 5 rolls of attic insulation
The difference in NZ is public transport is non-existent (especially in small towns) and generally much larger distances between places. Funny enough though it wouldn't have been possible for us to do our day to day things without a car in Auckland
Oh for sure small town new zealand would be harder and good on you for doing it.
