Me and my OH are probably taking my niece (11) to a trail centre for her birthday but she'll need a lid, what's out there? I'm thinking possibly full face rather than a trail lid cos she'll want to have a go at some reds.

I got my kids kitted out at Evans. They're a good selection of kids stuff, including helmets

Specialized do great kids lids which, from your nieces perspective are brill because not only are they pink and funky, the ratchets on the back have been specifically (and very cleverly) designed to be pony-tail friendly 🙂

Binnerette number two (aged 12) in hers

not a FF but my son has a Giro Tremor and apart from the anti-pinch chin buckle it has the same build and roc-loc ratchet fitting as the adult helmets. Looks good in matte finish and lots of colours, bug netting and a snap-on peak - thumbs up from me.
Giro

My 9 year old has a Bell Sidetrack and my 11 year old has a XS (I think) Giro Chronicle.

Both are good, the Chronicle is better.

Brill, thanks for the suggestions, there's plenty to go on there. Fortunately the weathers forecast to be a bit bobbins up here so I've got time to get her sorted out before the weather clears up!

If it's any good to you, my son has outgrown a (not Full face) Specialized Tactic in Black - didn't wear it much, didn't crash! Like this, but prev version - https://www.evanscycles.com/specialized-tactic-3-helmet-EV305147?colour=8500
Happy to pass it on for £15 or however much covers postage.
Will get size details in a bit if interested.

IDP M4 is cheap and fits my 11 year old youngster really nicely

Full face might put her off if not used to it and in the heat as well. If you have a decathlon store near you they do a range of lids for kids. I bought a couple of these recently for similar purposes for my two nephews and they seem every bit as good as the expensive branded ones twice the price from evans.

Nothing specific to offer, but my two (11 & 9) have been in adult lids for a while (XS & S).

Only saying as there's more choice for adults.

There's a head circumference measurement on most major brands, so just take a tape measure and go round the widest part of the head if you can.

I'd be less pro a FF for a new rider as above, hot and a bit overwhelming for a newbie. But each to their own.

Other consideration for girls (in particular?) is hair style. Not something I'd have previously thought of, but they do (sometimes) insist on maintaining some sort of style to which I have no comprehension and results in all manner of adjustments to the head band...

Good luck!

This does appear a bit random, (and overkill) but if you do want FF....
Got a giro switchblade and bell super 3 for my 11 and 13 year olds. Both mediums. Cost about £300 for the pair.

Endura have made a kids helmet with koroyd in it. At this specific moment, me buying anything that resembled a load of plastic straws would have me disowned by my daughter!

+1 for the pony-tail friendly spesh helmet.

It's not random if you know the lass! She's into kickboxing and will chuck herself at anything and I'd like to be able to hand her back with all her teeth in place. Hairstyle is tied back and out of the way of having fun 😆 But yes, I think a trail lid will do for now, FF later if she wants to try a bit more DHy stuff.

Cool. Sounds like a more sensible approach. From the digging I did last month, all the "cheaper"FFs look way too hot to use round an XC Loop and she'll just get pissed off and remove it.

The decent airy ones like switchblade and Bell Super are much nicer, but 150quid for one ride is pretty steep.
