LH thread torque wrench ?

So the Treks both have a UDH, that uses a LH thread. 30Nm.

I tried with my Draper torque wrench a few weeks ago and ended up destroying the Mech Hanger (plastic), which brought many complexities, one of which was me throwing the Draper in the bin as it didn't work.
(i've now found out it DID work fine)

But many torque wrenches it seems don't do LH threads...

I bought a Sealey, which i tried yesterday... No clicky....
So i emailed Sealey and got a reply that the Torque Wrench doesn't do LH thread.. apparently not many do.

They do one.. but it's £121 instead of £40 lol... Nice..

So, what other torque wrenches do you know of that do reverse/LH threads ?

Cheers.

Park TW-2.2 instead? No need for clicking then

I've got a Halfords one that does. You reverse it by popping out the square drive and fitting it the other way..

Not sure it works the same way but the modern equivalent would be this: Halfords Advanced Wrench

Description says it does what you need.

There are loads of reversible torque wrenches out there, Norbar for the win - but a bit pricey, last a lifetime though.

Cheap from Cromwell tools - https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/hand-tools/torque-wrenches/3-8in-torque-wrench-19-to-110nm/p/SEN5570400K

Probabaly ok for the 25Nm of a UDH and BB's ? (Not sure what size square drive you would prefer)

Edit - just seen you bought the Halfords one.

For anyone else with the same issue, get a longer 8mm hex/ allen socket and tighten down the UDH from the inside of the stays with your torque wrench, I personally have a digital one that measures torque in both directions.

You need to be careful, just because it has the reversible switch doesn't mean it does both directions.

Got it... works perfectly well...

Bolt should be 25Nm, i'd say based upon a bit of testing it was about 21-22Nm where i'd set it without torque wrench, so no terrible 🙂

The Halfords one is a Norbar. I've a few:

Norbar TTi50 is what you want

You can also use a normal wrench and apply weights with some calculations to allow for the length of the wrench.

All of mine do LH and RH operation - Halfords (Norbar), Park TW-5 and a cheapie Jobsworth one. I'm surprised there are many out there that don't.

I'm pretty sure mine only measures RH threads. The head is reversible but it doesn't measure both ways

as above - just because a torque wrench has a reversible ratchet, does not automatically mean it will read in both directions...

Hillman Imp rear hub nut - Haynes manual suggests a 6 year old child standing on the end of a 3ft pole in lieu of an appropriate torque wrench....

Yep I have a TTi50 and a TTi20 and yep both have a reversible ratchet, but only reads in clockwise.

also useful to have a anticlock reading torque wrench for things like certain suspension pivots - Bird collet axles are a case in point, not left hand thread, but as you drive them from the 'wrong' end you need a left hand reading wrench.

I use a Norbar TTf20 as it has a push through head meaning works in both directions.

Classic Britool torque wrenches also have a push through head.

In the Bike world Park Tool TW-6.2 does both directions

I bought a 'reversible' torque wrench from Screwfix for fitting BBs. You can switch it to the other direction BUT it doesn't click to show a required torque.

From reading above, this doesn't sound unusual.

I had an ancient Draper one with a reversible ratchet. Used it for BB's and that was the first time I tried reversing the rathet. Fortunately I thought that it was taking quite a lot to make it click so stopped before I FUBAR'd the frame. Now I do the normal thread with the torque wrench and do the reverse thread by feel, quickly after. Haven't broken a BB yet.

This is the way. There's a big torque window of 35-55 Nm anyway.

axles are a case in point, not left hand thread, but as you drive them from the ‘wrong’ end you need a left hand reading wrench.

Interesting one. I bought a Park beam one to do mine, don't remember seeing the TTf20 at the time.

Hmmmm - maybe my smaller ones don’t measure torque anti-clockwise- I’d always assumed the do but have never actually used it - will check!

The Halfords ones definitely do though, as the reversing is done by pushing the square driver through the wrench so it sticks out of the other side, so the important part of the torque wrench doesn’t see any difference (and I’ve used it as such quite a bit, tightening bottom bracket shells and pedals.

A nice way of visualising a million Nn (related to wind turbine gearboxes) - a “golf kilometre” - a 1000kg mass on the end of a 1000m lever.

This seems the most sensible answer from Noeffs.

The cheap lifeline or jobsworth wrench from Planet X does reverse torque. Can’t remember it’s range tho, 25nm?

I thought I’d read that the TTi range and the Pro range measure both ways due to the 3/8 or 1/2 drive being a push through or rotating around the shaft?

@colo

Norbar TTf is non ratchet and push through head so does both directions. TTi reversible but only reads in one direction. Basing that on the 1/4 and 3/8 drives one I have.

their pro versions have a options of push through ratchet and swappable heads so do both directions. But are more money.
