Decided to treat myself to a 2014 Kona Unit.

I'd asked about the 2013 a couple of weeks but decided to go for the 2014 instead.

It's raw with Cyan tint. looks beter in the flesh than on the Kona website.

I'm swapping the cranks over to my SLX ones, and I'll change the brakes too. Ordered some valves and tape to go tubeless.

And I'll be running less than 35psi minimum on the sidewall, will I die?!

Let's see yours then!

Oh does that mean you can see it?!

Na not weighed it yet, will do though.

Unit frame
Kinesis carbon tapered forks
Thomson stem and post
Crank bros flat bars
Bontrager ti saddle
Deore crank and bb
Surly cog
Hope chainring
Hope pro3 hubs with 719 rims
Elixir 1 brakes

Waiting on the king headset.

Need some wider flat bars, suggestions? And also a set of higher volume tyres, nics or ardents I think. How are the ardents on yours?

Yours looks sweet too !!! Would love to know the weight of yours too.. I see the 2014 is reynolds 520 chromoly.. What is the tubing on yours ?

You need to copy/paste the bbc code for pic to appear rather than a link 🙂

Do I just paste the URL here, or use the IMG button and paste it there? Do I leave the http first?

Not ridden it yet to say anything about the Ardents, they look to have my kind of tread pattern though.

I haven't weighed it yet either, I've knocked 200g by swapping the cranks over, probably due to losing the bash mostly I'd say.

I do like the look of the 13 Unit, the 2014 comes in 17" which fits me better.

RJ- how do you find the carbon forks compared to the P2s?

Ye I've got some conti mountain king 2.2 on at the moment that I had lying around at home but I hated them when I used them, I've ridden over loughrigg in Ambleside hundreds of times without a puncture and had three in two rides there when I used them first! Probably gonna get some ardents.

Can't comment on the fork yet im afraid, still waiting for my headset to arrive. I just swapped them straight up when I bought the frameset and sold the p2s on here unused.

Often admired that one whilst lurking!

How do you find the bb7s? My mates got a bit seized during the puffer, kind of puts me off.

Rogan Josh- what gearing have you gone for? I ride mainly around Keswick so pretty similar terrain.

I've not done any SSing for a few weeks now, its gonna be hard work for its first time out

32x19, what about yours?

I've never had a ss before! Converted my hardtail for a bit a while back and rode 32x16 which I found pretty hard in the lakes, so I think 32x19 will be a bit easier. The bars I've got on at the moment are only 680mm so think ill need wider for all the cranking!

Vortexracing- I thought the red part was in adjuster, sorry. I blame my tiny phone screen.

Rogan Josh- Its stock with 32:18, I ran the same ratio on my Kula but that was 26". I was toying with a higher ratio so I'll see how I get on.

All kept rigid do far, no one fancied sticking a suspension fork on one?

Took my Unit for its first blast on Saturday. Thought I'd take it somewhere I know well so just headed up to Whinlatter, rode really nice. Gearing is a little harder but rolls well on the swoopy bits so I'll persevere with 32:18 for now.

Ardents felt really good so converted to tubeless, bonus that the rims come ready fitted with proper tape.

Think I'll need some chunky grips for my spade-like hands though.

EDIT: Rogan Josh- It was just under 27lb with SLX chainset (no bash) and Hayes Strokers.

Alright, it's not a Unit, but it's not a million miles different, 520 tubes and even the same colour as Rorschach's'is is. [img] [/img]

edit - now with flat bars and that bottle got bounced out of the cage somewhere too.

RJ- looks good, really like the skin wall tyres, can they be run tubeless? Have you got in dirty yet?

Mine came from a mate who bought some without realising they were the tan walls so I gave him what a set of black ones would cost when they were back in stock, just wanted some ardents and was curious to see how they'd look.

They're not the tubeless ones, and I've just got 719 rims so technically no but I'm sure that they could be bodged, however I am definitely not an expert in tubelessness.

Ye ridden it a few times, 32x19 and it's fine for getting up all sorts in the lakes with a bit of effort, really have to attack some of the climbs and then ease off to recover when you can instead of just tapping away on a 3x10, loads of fun. Not touched my full Sus since I got it!

Love seeing these. Really close to pulling the trigger on this. I am wondering about the strength/durability of the stock wheels. I am a big clyde @ 6'3" 280 and I ride heavy.

Does this years still have the WTB i23's? I can't fault them, I'm not particularly heavy but I clatter them through some pointy rocks around the Lakedistrict. I have upgraded the hubs to hope though, front to accommodate thru-axles and rear to have something more serviceable.

I had an orange 08 one, looked lovely, rode like a tank.

The SH Rigg I replaced it with was a ton lighter and better to ride.
