4 digit combo cable 'lock'
Or perhaps a Honey Trap....
I know nothing about eebs buy I'm guessing a Spesh roadie doesn't come cheap.
Good god...
WTH!!!!!! (what the heck)
At the least you may as well take the light thats nicely plonked on the top with no form of security.
good god, id be temped to get some popcorn and sit across the road
Insurance job 🤷🏼♂️
That is madness... Is there a punchline?
Back in 2000 there was a litespeed that used to be left unlocked outside Sainsbury's in hastings.
Just checked and the £171 million euro millions winners are from Gloucestershire so unlikely.
It was the green climate summit today - there were only good things happening in Manchester.
OT but the summit was great too. Spent all day there and it was fantastic. Not so good seeing those electric scooters randomly abandoned around Salford.
That's an exploding honey trap with the battery compartment full of C4. Possibly.
They're probably new to cycling, right? Someone with a bit of cash and good intentions but painful naivety? I'm not quite sure how to tell them...
Painful naivety of humanity?! Doesn't matter if you're new to biking, unless he's just been born he must know people are scumbags! Or is this selection of the fittest and he clearly deserves what happens? After all the sabre tooth tigers didn't wear highvis vests! I agree with the popcorn sentiment, part of me would have to sit and wait and see what happens.
I was there too funkmasterp and it was a good day. Fairness seemed to be the word that I heard most which is a good thing in my book.
wavecell helmet, they probably deserve it

I can see that some people might see a steel wire and consider it pretty unbreakable. We know better, of course, but I'm willing to believe some people are that daft / naive (delete as appropriate).
They’re probably new to cycling, right?
Look pedals. Dunno if that supports or refutes your pov. 😁

I did in fact drive back past on my way out of the carpark ( Tesco) and it was already gone. Probably quite lucky he didn't arrive when I was taking the picture and lamp me.
Though by the look of it [s]he was quite wee.
This got me thinking - do ebikes not have some sort of motor lock so you can't just wheel/ride them away?
Those VanMoof thingys have some kind of built in locking mechanism, an audible alarm and a tracker in case the scrotes try and chuck it in the back of the van.
What's nearby?
Surely leaving a light, helmet and saddle pack on, the owner isn't far away and it's a 'nip in the shops , while the bike is still in sight' type of security?

Could be.
‘If you can’t touch it and it isn’t locked it’s already gone’?
Apparently our one time PM Dave (remember him, from the dim and distant past pre Brexit, Covid, Boris and - worst of all - Liz!!!!) chained his bike to a bollard, and on returning to it later was surprised to find that it was no longer there.
And he went on to 'run' our country..
And he went on to ‘run’ our country..
You spelled ruin wrongly.
Surely leaving a light, helmet and saddle pack on, the owner isn’t far away and it’s a ‘nip in the shops , while the bike is still in sight’ type of security?
So you mean effectively no security? Because that's what that lock represents.
Laughing at joat's response - chapeau
What’s nearby?
It was underneath Altrincham tesco.

Agree, [s]he wasn't far away as a termite bores, but [s]he was nowhere near close enough for that type of lock. I'd say anything more that 5 seconds is the limit für that.
Altrincham isn't Manchester - it's miles away ! It would have been gone in the city.
Ah but Altrincham is close enough to the poshville of Hale etc to get a higher class of thief. They'd thank you as they cycled past you on your bike!
Altrincham isn’t Manchester
THIS !!!
And you were probably being watched.
It was underneath Altrincham tesco.
As has been said, Altrincham might be connected by tram but it is not Manchester. Might have gotten away with a 70s combination lock.
Can someone enlighten me as to why this is such a bad lock?
I use a 4 digit cable lock when out and about on my bike.
What should I be using instead (lightweight options only please)?
Can someone enlighten me as to why this is such a bad lock?
On a ride into the remote countryside with a stop or two at a local cafe or pub this would be a fine lock.
If, as was suggested, this was a lock used in a city such as Manchester and it was badly locking up this fancy e-bike then it is at very high likelihood of being stolen by any passing wannabe thief, let alone a proper thief.
That cable that would be fine in the countryside suddenly becomes as gossamer in the city. A leatherman, a pair of proper pliers, some short length bolt cutters, a handy battery powered angle grinder - all tools potentially carried by wannabes and real thieves. Snip, cut, buzz and that gossamer is cut and the bike is gone.
The amusement here derives from the wholly unsuitable lock for city centre manchester for such a nice bike. And then of course the revelation that it wasn't city centre Manchester but respectable Altrincham. Though being an urban environment I'd still pick a better lock.
Your question: lightweight only please. Well it still seems that weight correlates with security. There's no lock I can think of that would be city centre secure for a nice bike that's as lightweight as the combination cable lock shown. Lightest I'd use is a Litelok core flex. And that isn't so light.
Example on cable security - I had a bike hanging from the rafters of my suburban Manchester garage. It was 'secured' by a Kryptonite cable and a modest padlock. Thieves broke in and cut through that with the handy loppers my SO kept in the garage. Gone. They also tried to cut through an Abus motorcycle lock that secured a more valuable bike to a floor anchor - they scratched the plastic finish.
