[Closed] Lefty Max - no damping?

So I was sure that this fork had no oil in it - been lying around for ages. Was readying to change out the seal and full it up as it was like a pogo stick with no compression or rebound damping. Opened it up and it was full of oil?

Does anybody have any experience with this ? The adjuster knob turns indefinitely with no click and no matter what I can't get any damping.

Some tips would be appreciated before I pull it apart this weekend.

Cheers

I would suggest getting on the Cannondale forum on MTBR.COM and try and contact Mendoncyclesmith.

There is also a "sticky" thread about Lefty servicing.

Have you opened up the top end to see if oil is leaking through? (failed seal)
It's how mine went - sent off to Thumbprint to be fixed & serviced before you ask, though I suspect replacing/installing the "quad seal" would have fixed the main damping issue.

All the oil was where it should be but maybe I'll dig a bit further into the internals My understanding is that if the oil seal goes then it'll spit the oil out through the boot in pretty impressive style.

I'll follow up with mtbr and a bit more fiddling but Thumbprint is new to me, good advice. I know that TF only service Lefty's 06 onward.

I had mine serviced a couple of years ago, similar issues that you describe, but my dial stopped lock to lock ok. It was a bit weak on damping needing the dial to be turn almost to max to get a reasonable rate, but it was fine really. I've never seen any oil escape, nor has water ingress.
I'm about to add a shim to make it 29er 80mm travel spec so will be pulling mine apart soon.

Nope, well at least that was not my experience with two units that failed, in those cases the oil transmitted into the "uppers" & the coil was visibly covered in oil when removed (easy to do/check: undo top cap with HT II tool [careful of the rebound adjuster] and pull it out to show the spring).
